THE
SITUATION IN AMBON / MOLUCCAS - Report No. 386 2003-15-09
|
Ambon, September 15, 2003
1.
INSTALLATION OF THE NEW GOVERNOR Minister of Home Affairs
Hari Sabarno arrived yesterday in Ambon to install the
newly-elected governor of the Moluccas Karel Albert Ralahalu, and
deputy governor M. Adullah Latuconsina, on behalf of the president
of Indonesia. The ceremony took place in the Baileo Siwalima Hall
in Karang Panjang, Ambon, this morning and was broadcast live on
local radio and TV. Their tenure will last up to 2008.
2. CIVIL EMERGENCY LIFTED During the ceremony, Minister
Hari Sabarno also read the Decree by President Megawati ending the
civil emergency state of the Moluccas. Military chief Agustadi
Sasongko Purnomo said he was most satisfied with this Decree, and
he fully backed the transfer of the command on matters of security
from the military to the Police Department. He said he trusted the
people of the Moluccas to assist security personnel in alertness
to any symptoms of unrest.
Meanwhile the situation in Ambon was quiet the whole day long,
people going about their daily business as usual.
3. CONGRATULATIONS TO SARUNDAYANG Acting Governor Sinyo
Harry Sarundayang is much praised because of his succesfully
accomplishing several assignments: consolidating the end of the
conflict and the orderly election of a new governor both for the
province of the North Moluccas and for the province of the
Moluccas. It is no overstatement to call Sarundayang an expert
on matters of solving regional conflict, said La Djeni Hasmar,
an MP that had come to Ambon for the occasion. In our report 267
we wrote: On April 19, 2002, Minister of Home Affairs Hari
Sabarno installed a certain Sinyo Harry Sarundayang as acting
governor of the North Moluccas to replace Abdul Muhyi Effendi.
Sarundayang was installed as Acting Governor of the Moluccas on
December 11, 2002 (Report 336). Actually his principal occupation
is his work as chief of the General Inspectorate of the Ministry
of Home Affairs in Jakarta.
4. RABIES SPREADING The outbreak of rabies we reported
on in Report 383, has already affected 196 persons. Meanwhile on
the island of Ambon a total of ten persons have died of the
disease.
