THE
SITUATION IN AMBON / MOLUCCAS - Report No. 377 2003-17-08
|
Ambon, August 17, 2003
1.
FURTHER NEWS ON GOVERNOR ELECTION – Yesterday the Provincial
Legislative Council elected Karel Albert Ralahalu and Mohammad
(“Memet”) Abdullah Latuconsina as the new Governor and Vice
Governor of the Moluccas. It was a narrow victory of 20 votes
versus the 18 votes for the couple Z.Sahuburua and Mohammad Taher
Laitupa. It could have been 22 votes, had not two ballots been
invalid because of misspelling of the candidate’s name.
Sahuburua, however, saw his name misspelled by four voters;
otherwise he, too, would have had 22 votes to his name.
2. AMBON QUIET DURING ELECTION – The ten hours’ voting session
was entirely broadcast on local TV. Most people in town meanwhile
were busying themselves with their daily occupations or were
watching the election on TV. It is apparent, that, as a whole,
people are happy with this choice. The defeated couples
congratulated Karel and Memet with them being elected.
3. A MILITARY AND AN ECONOMIST – Karel Albert is a retired
Brigader General of the Army. At the start of the conflict in the
Moluccas, 19 January 1999, he was the military chief commander –
Danrem 174/Pattimura in Ambon. We remember him as very skillfully
tackling the conflict then. However, he was moved to become Kasdam
VIII/Trikora at Jayapura (Papua) shortly afterwards.
Mohammad Abdullah Latuconsina is a retired economist. His last job
was heading the provincial Revenue Department (Dinas Pendapatan
Daerah Maluku) from 1999 to 2001.
Both are members of the PDI-P = “Indonesian Democratic Party for
Struggle”.
