THE
SITUATION IN AMBON / MOLUCCAS - Report No. 376 2003-16-08
|
Ambon, August 16, 2003
1.
RALAHALLO CHOSEN AS THE NEW GOVERNOR – Today the Provincial
Legislative Council chose Karel Albert Ralahallo as the new
governor for the period 2003 – 2008. Second in command will be
Mohamad Abdullah Latuconsina. We have not learned about any
irregularities or uproar during the election.
2. RETURN OF JAVANESE REFUGEES – We read on
www.malukumediacentre.net that 726 former Javanese transmigrants
have embarked at Surabaya, Java, to return to the North Moluccas,
from where they had fled several years ago
3. FOREIGN INVESTORS – The quiet situation in the Moluccas
induces some foreign corporations to come (back) to the Moluccas.
Thus several Chinese companies have opened talks with local
authorities for joint venture fishing activities in the Moluccas.
4. REBUILDING OF WAAI – The totally destroyed christian village
of Waai, on the East coast of the island of Ambon, is being
rebuilt by the villagers themselves, facilitated by government
funds. Two large barracks have been built and are now sheltering
those that are involved in reconstruction activities, whereas most
women and children are still in the refugee sites in Passo. Both
Security Forces and the two nearby Muslim villages of Tulehu and
Liang guarantee safe return of the Waaiese to their homestead.
