THE
SITUATION IN AMBON / MOLUCCAS - Report No. 375 2003-13-08
|
Ambon, August 13, 2003
1. REUNIFICATION OF OFFICES – Since the conflict erupted in the Moluccas,
January 1999, most government and privately owned offices were split into a Muslim
one and a Christian one. As the situation is gradually returning to normal interreligious
relationships, a number of offices have already been united again spontaneously.
Acting Governor Sarundayang has ordered that starting at the national celebration day
of Indonesian Independence, next August 17, there must be no alternative offices any
more, but all employees will return to the original offices insofar these offices have
escaped destruction.
2. FOREIGN ENVOYS TO ATTEND WORKSHOP IN AMBON – Last July 20-21 a
workshop on the reconstruction of Ambon, attented by a number of foreign
ambassadors and representatives of international agencies and non-governmental
organizations should have been held. However, it was delayed because part of the
participants could not attend due to previous other commitments.
Meanwhile it has been suggested to hold the workshop during the city's 428th
anniversary next September 7. The workshop aims to find ways to reconstruct
Ambon. It is to take place in Ambon, as the participants want to obtain firsthand
information on what the Ambonese want.
3. UNFAIRNESS TOWARDS REFUGEES – Mgsr. P.C.
Mandagi, bishop of Amboina,
spoke out his regret on the frequent cases of injustice towards the refugees: by
apparently favouring one to another, by withholding part of the refugees' allowances,
by manipulating figures etc.
4. ELECTION NEW GOVERNOR NEXT SATURDAY – The election of the new
governor and vice governor of the Moluccas by the provincial Legislative Council will
take place next Saturday, August 16. Military chief commander Agustadi Sasongko
Purnomo said the Council members will enjoy special protection. The Council building
at Karang Panjang will be encircled by 1,300 military and police security forces.
