Foreign envoys to attend workshop in conflict-torn Ambon

AMBON, Maluku (Antara): A number of foreign ambassadors and representatives of international agencies and non-governmental organizations have committed to attending a postponed workshop on the reconstruction of Ambon, the city mayor said.

"Foreign ambassadors, leaders of United Nations agencies and NGOs are committed to attend the workshop, even though it has had to be rescheduled," Jopie Papilaya said here on Friday.

The workshop, which was to be held on July 20 and July 21, was delayed because a number of participants could not attend because of previous commitments, the mayor said.

Some participants have asked the Ambon administration to hold the workshop during the city's 428th anniversary on Sept. 7, he said.

Ambon, the capital of Indonesia's Maluku province, was wracked by a three-year sectarian conflict that began on Jan. 19, 1999.

"The aim of the workshop is to reconstruct Ambon, so the participants want to obtain firsthand information on what the Ambonese want," the mayor said.
