Land mine kills one
in Indonesia's restive Ambon
JAKARTA (JP) - A man
identified as Mareuz Lerenz was killed after stepping on a land
mine near the restive eastern Indonesian city of Ambon, agencies
reported.
He died at a polyclinic in Ambon on Saturday, two hours after
he stepped on the mine, which was on a rarely used footpath in
hills on the outskirts of Ambon, after returning with a friend
from hunting. His left leg was blown off.
Ambon is the capital of an island of the same name. The area
has been troubled by violence between Muslims and Christians
despite a peace pact in February that aims at ending more than
three years of sectarian clashes there.
Peace has returned to most of the Maluku islands where
thousands died in Muslim-Christian violence that began in January
1999.
