The name is Portuguese for flowers, as the Portuguese were the first to colonize the island. They eventually sold it to the Dutch. The most notable feature of Flores is Catholicism; 95% of the population is catholic. The church dominates practically every tiny village however a small Muslim population lives on the coasts.
