Here's the link for the paisley course:
http://www.paisley.ac.uk/courses.asp?Group=0814&Category=ug
You might have to paste it in the browser address bar. I read
about the laptop thing in the prospectus. I'll have another read
tonight, and check.
What courses are you applying for, Mchugh?

Oh, sorry, I've applied for: Derby
(Software Development) Lincoln (Games
Programmng) Middlesex(Graphics and Games) Paisley (Computer
Games Technology) Teesside (Computer Games Programming)
Is the teesside course really hard to get into? Ive had nothing
back as yet, just an offer from middlesex, and i can't stand the
wait.
Tell me about the uni and course and stuff.
thanks.

i'm
1st year studying bs/c Games tech at Abertay so i'm gonna write some
stuff.
Paisley isnt near enough to edinburgh to consider DMA as local,
unless scotland is the local area. more likely to be red lemon or
steel monkeys or the like.
quote:
Firstly it's in SCOTLAND! Teeside is already pushing it distance
wise for me, let alone full blown scotland!
tommo: whats the difference between full blown scotland
and normal scotland, the both sound pretty damn good to me
:/ theres one guy, probbly posting right below me he's from
gibraltar[so's his brother]
quote:
Secondly it's got that 'oxford' karma about it
it's much better than oxford, although i've never been to
oxford in my life. but then i might be biased.
quote:
I mean I didn't even bother, because I just *knew* about 5
million people would apply, and well I haven't got that much
cofindence in myself.
about 400ish (5/6 to every available place)
anyway its dead good, and we went to the pub during freshers
week with the guy who did the lemmings voices.

I'd
be the guy from gibraltar,......(I did actually write a load of
stuff here, but i cut it out because it would have probably got me
kicked off the boards, needless to say i don't really agree about u
lot complaining about the distnace)....
Like radio, i'm at abertay doing my first year of Games Tech. As
far as i'm concerned the course is top rate, striking a good balance
between both the coding side of game development, but also the
graphics and multimedia aspects (we do modules in 3D modelling,
sound to complement the more technical programming maths). BTW for
all you "hippies" (aka Hippy scum, or computer artists) out there,
Abertay also does the course "Bsc Computer Arts". As the name
suggests it deals with computer graphics, and runs alongside CGTech,
sharing some of the module content. Our final year is spent
developing a game of our own, at which stage the two courses work
together to develop the final project.
As for getting into the course i can't really comment, apart from
telling you that both me and my brother got unconditional
acceptances to both the games, and computer arts courses with 5
higher qualifications (2xA's + 3xB's - AABB are the entry
requirements). One thing that might interest you is that you don't
have to be some insanely good programmer just to get on the course.
Don't get me wrong, the more experience with coding you have, the
easier it will be for you - although really the first year
programming modules are aimed more at getting everyone up to the
same standard (some of the guys here have years of C/C++ coding
experience, while others have none). I myself had very little coding
knowledge (arguably i still don't) but as long as u put the effort
in, u pick it up as you go.
What more can i say.......Oh yeah, the ninja monkeys, gotta watch
out for them little buggers, nasty bastards they are too -
freestyle-walk all over your face if your not careful....
Ben
BTW you'd understand all of this monkey nonesense if you were
part of the course...but no....your all applying to teeside aren't
you...... Oh well, its your loss. (Although having said that i
applied to, and got accepted to Teeside, and it was indeed my second
choice. I chose Abertay because it had been doing the course
longest, and i wanted to return back to Scotland)

so far, i have been informed that i will be put forward for
placements at SCi (makers of Carmageddon) and Skaramoosh (TV
graphics, e.g. the Tomorrows World credits). They are both in
London. I would be grateful with either of these (preferably SCi
though), but nothing will be comfirmed for a good while yet - i
could still end up in a BT call center!
I'll post back if i get any more news.

Do
you guys know much about the MSc in Games Tech at Abertay? I'm just
about to finish a computing BSc and was contemplating going for the
MSc there, but don't really know if i can be arsed with another year
in education. What's abertay actually like? |

Im
not too sure what the MSc entails, i'm only doing the BSc but its
good. Abertay's kinda looked down on by the Univesity of Dundee,
cos we were a bunch of dundee colleges [business/polytechnic and
stuff] 5/6 yrs ago, but they're up their own arses. The course
however is well respected, first of its kind in the world, staffed
by ex-DMA people etc. The actual resources are good, we have
decent enough machines for learning on in the main lab(im not sure
of the actual spec (500Mhz(?), geforce2s, 19" monitors, cd
re-writers, zip drives optical mice). we use visual studio for
programming and theres about a million other programs that weve not
needed yet but photoshop, 3ds max, flash5 etc are all there. We
have 24hr access to all the games labs and a library of games and
machines that gets £500/month to spend.
dundees pretty good as well the uni part-runs a competiotion
over the summer to start up a digital business, i suggest you look
at this, it tells you a bit about the uni/resources and
dundee. >> http://www.embreonix.com/

I
clicked on Active Topics and this one screamed out at me. I'm
afraid I can't help you with your choices at uni, since I'm thick as
pig shit (and thus a hairdresser), but I can give you tips on how to
be "street". Ask Snowman, he's streeter already.
Try this one -
When you see a particularly hot babe, make sure you're wearing
shades to make you look mysterious. Even if it's dark and indoors.
Infact, especially if it's dark and indoors. She will then offer to
spoon.
Hope that helped.

Hey, how's everyone going with their uni offers then? I've
still only got the two, Middlesex and Paisley. What about u, Tommo?

There's nothing quite like the embarrassment of doing that.
Second only to xmas time. When you go to give your gran a xmas

I've got all five, except for Lincoln Uni. It's really odd,
cause my mate who sent off like the same time and lives like 5 doors
away from me, got his from them about a week after the UCAS form
went off. Me, I still haven't got it. And after just receiving
this:
quote:
"We have nothing on the system to come out to you at the
moment, but please feel free to try again next
week. Regards Admissions"
From them after I enquired yesterday, I'm beginning to think
about telling them to stuff it. Why the hell do I have to contact
them next week?!? Can't they just find the form and see what's
happening to it? Grr
Nevermind. I think it's a bit odd that you've got only the two? I
thought that you're meant to give your final first and second
choices to UCAS by mid Easter?
Anyway, I've more or less got my heart set on Teesside now (so no
more 'you should apply to this course blah blah' stuff cause it's
too late now, where were you all six months ago?!? ).

It's really bad that i've only got the 2 offers. I've got a
friend who sent his form off mid jan, then 6.5 minutes later, got an
accepteance from teesside!
It's the waiting that kills me
Obviously tesside is top of my list, and i bet i'm gonna be
waiting till late april!
last offer must be made to me by april 23, apparentley. ooh, i
might get an offer by, i say, april 22nd!
