Treatment
The most common treatments for ADHD are stimulant medications.  The one that is known by nearly everyone is methlyphenidate aka Ritalin.  Drugs work by increasing activity in the prefrontal cortex and decreasing activity in the striatum.  There are a host of other drugs as well like cyalert, adderal, and stratera to name a few.  The effectiveness of a drug depends on the genes a person has.  The genes responsible code for dopamine transporters and dopamine receptors.  If one drug does not work or the side affects are too severe, then you are switched to a different one.  Overall durgs are effective for 85-90% of all people (Lesesne, 168).  In addition to drugs, therapy is also availble but less is known about its effectiveness.  Drugs are the choice due to its cost and immediate effects.
