The major neurotransmitters believed to cause ADHD is norepinephrine and dopamine. The problem results from the "signal to noise ratio" in the brain (Durston, 185). The noise is created by excess activation of the striatum. The signal we want is in the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex in ADHD patients is underactivated. The prefrontal cortex controls our ability to plan, attention, how we behave, and other higher order fuctions. |
