"Debut author Lauryn Hale pens a vivid picture of the haunting ruins of loves destroyed by the war and its aftermath. Kristian's scars are no less obvious than Dean's, although they are internal. Together they present vividly real characterizations, filled with poignancy and struggle. The background of the West lends the novel a sense of presence and authenticity. Caution: some readers may be uncomfortable with the violence and rape, although they are not presented in great detail. A compelling, evocative read, THE UNDERTAKER comes highly recommended."

"THE UNDERTAKER depicts the West as gritty and harsh as it must have been for a woman alone. Kristian digs down and finds strength she never knew she had, as she fights to do anything necessary to protect her daughter. Her struggles are believably depicted and at times graphic. Undertaker is a man far from the image one would think, he is kind hearted, loyal and understanding. He has hidden behind his hat feeling that he would draw stares and gossip if people saw his face. When Reggie sees his face and isn't scared, it is a touching moment between the two -- a child's unconditional love is such a gift. I truly wanted to see Kristian, Reggie and the Undertaker have a happily ever after. The action is fast-paced and kept me turning the pages late into the night.
THE UNDERTAKER is a well-written tale that takes the reader back to a rough time and place for women. I enjoyed this story and recommend it to those who enjoy a tale of the Wild West."

"Great story by first time novelist Lauryn Hale. I thought she captured this time period perfectly. I could picture the scenes in my head so well, and I really got to know the characters better, which I like. This is an author to look for in future books as well."  Review @ Book Review Cafe
"The Undertaker is an excellent debut novel from Lauryn Hale. It is a romance about Dean Willis and Kristian Rosell... Dean and Kristian both bear scars from their past-Dean's on the outside, and Kristian's on the inside. They learn to look past these imperfections, and we are treated to the process. It helped make both characters very lovable and real... The setting was magnificent, and the supporting cast as colorful as befits a tale of the Wild West.
I rated the book 4 stars out of a possible 5... the romance was sweeping and wonderful, the plot excellent, and I did love the characters. This book made me tear up on several different occasions, and is definitely a superior read! I hope to have the opportunity to read more from this author!" (c) Kara Wolf @
