The PAYNEs of Dromore and Dundee The PAYNEs of Dromore and Dundee

The PAYNEs of Dromore, Co. Down, Ireland & Dundee, Scotland, with Allied Families

My Family Genealogy

Updated W 12/19/2007: Updated my E-mail addy.

WELCOME TO MY FAMILY GENEALOGY PAGE. I am searching for all branches of my family: blood-related, descendants, as well as in-laws. All are pieces of a very fun puzzle! I am particularly searching PAYNEs in Scotland and Ireland, my Mother's Father's line. (Fellow PAYNE researchers: are you aware that there is a world-wide PAYNE Mailing List? See bottom of this page for instructions on how to subscribe.)

DUNDEE & ANGUS CO., SCOTLAND Researchers: I am/was the Listowner/Administrator for the ANGUS CO., SCOTLAND Mailing List, which I founded in 1998. The List is for researchers who are interested in the genealogy and history of ANGUS CO., SCOTLAND (including the city of DUNDEE). If you would like to subscribe to this free mailing list, see instructions at the bottom of this page.

HERE is a new version of my family history, a set of webpages which include a surname listing. Please E-mail me (SaturnCat@juno.com) if you have any matches.

I am also compiling pages that are in DESCENDANCY format: I like to work with these, as the generations and relationships are easily seen.

My Family History in Narrative Format

I am descended from Hugh PAYNE and Elizabeth (Elisa) PARKS (or Margaret GRANT), both probably born ca. 1780 in Co. Down, Ireland, possibly Dromore Parish. The PAINE/PAYNE family inhabited Dromore Parish, Co. Down, Ireland for at least 5 generations beginning in the late 1700s and became fairly extensive; most were linen weavers. Hugh's parents were possibly Michael PAINE and Anne HAMILTON, born about 1760. At the time of the Irish Famine, my family lived in or around Belfast. Some of my family perished, while some emigrated to Scotland. Those that survived were lucky enough to have a trade-- weaving-- that could be applied to the jute industry which was developing in Dundee.

Our family remained in Dundee until the end of World War I, when the jute mill industry began to dwindle. Some branches of the family remained in Scotland, others emigrated to England, Holland, the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Australia.

One of the most interesting characters in my family was Hamilton PAYNE, born at the beginning of the Irish Famine in Belfast. Hamilton grew up in Dundee and became a Tinsmith and Gasfitter. He married Betsy DUNBAR and they had a son, David, in 1867. Somewhere during this time, Betsy apparently died. The son was left with his Grandfather and Hamilton emigrated to the U.S. between 1867 and 1870. He changed his name to William H. PAYNE, and was settled in Bucks Co., PA by 1870. Shortly thereafter, in 1872, he joined the army in Philadelphia and was sent to be stationed at Fort Baker, Montana. His company engaged the Nez Perce in "The Battle Of The Big Hole" near Wisdom, Montana on Aug. 9, 1877. Hamilton and many other soldiers were killed. Being very sympathetic to the plight of Native Americans, I have very mixed feelings about being related to someone involved in the Indian Wars, particularly the Nez Perce. Perhaps Hamilton, and other newcomers to America, naively joined the Army to seek adventure and were put in positions in which they had to defend themselves.

My story? I am a disabled archaeologist. I have also done historical research professionally since 1986, and genealogy professionally since 1994. I injured my back while on a volunteer archaeological project, and then was in a car accident. I received no compensation for the first injury, and little from the second, so I am trying to support myself through historical and genealogical research. I don't want charity! But if you or anyone you know has a need for a genealogist, I would be very grateful. I can research from scratch, do directed look-ups (I live near the National Archives in Washington, D.C.), transcribe written data into a genealogy program, and/or produce a website for you. I can provide references. Thank you. E-mail me at: SaturnCat@juno.com

I have also put together a separate "LOOSE" database for individuals that range from those I suspect I am related to that I have not fit in yet, to witnesses, to individuals that appear on the same page as data I have collected for my own family. Please E-mail me if you suspect you have a match. Having data readily available in a database makes it easier to check and manage, plus if matches are made, the individual records can be exported and imported into another database. I have compiled this database for my own use as well as for other researchers. I encourage everyone who has a genealogy program and website to do the same: set up a "LOOSE" database for the benefit of yourself and others.

LOOSE Database: Name, birth year, birthplace
