| Durin I the Deathless : The eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, the first of that race to be created by the Vala Aul.He was set to sleep under the mountains of Middle-earth until after the awakening of the Elves. When he woke,he journeyed in the wilds until he came upon the Mirrormere, the lake that the Dwarves call Kheled-zram. Looking upon mysterious stars reflected in its surface,he took this as a sign and there founded a great city tunnelled in the heart of the Misty Mountains. This was Khazad-dm,later called Moria.Durin lived to a great age even by the measure of the Dwarves, but though he was called the Deathless, he was not immortal. He died some time before the end of the First Age but he founded the line of the Kings of Durin's Folk that extended down through the history of Middle-earth. Durin VI : A descendant of Durin the Deathless,Durin VI was the King of Durin's Folk when the Balrog was awoken in Khazad-dm.The Balrog's name,Durin's Bane, comes from this King, who was one of the first to be slain by it.He was succeeded as King of Durin's Folk by his son Nin I. Nin I : The son of King Durin VI of Khazad-dm,who became King after his father was slain by the Balrog known as Durin's Bane.Nin's kingship lasted only a year, before he too was slain - his son Thrin I led the remnant of Durin's Folk away into the north. Thrin I : A descendant of Durin the Deathless and King of Durin's Folk, the son of Nin I and father of Thorin I. Thorin I : Son of Thrin I, and a distant ancestor of Thorin II Oakenshield. He led a great part of Durin's Folk from Erebor into the Grey Mountains. He had a son called Glin. Glin : The son of Thorin I, and father of in, King of Durin's Folk during the later Third Age. in : in was King of Durin's line, successor to Glin.In his time, the Dwarves of Durin's Folk still dwelt in the Grey Mountains of the north. In the later years of his reign, the Shadow returned to Dol Guldur in Mirkwood, and Orcs and other evil things began to multiply in the northern mountains. In in's last years, the Orcs plundered Moria, which was then deserted, and took it to dwell in. This was but the first of the calamities that were to befall the House of Durin over the coming centuries.in was 250 years old when he died, having reigned as King for 103 of those years. He was succeeded by his son Nin, who became King Nin II. King Nin II : King of Durin's line, successor to in.He led the Dwarves of Durin while they abode in the Grey Mountains. Late in his reign, dragons came south out of the Forodwaith, and began to assail the Dwarves.Nin was 247 years old when he died, having reigned as King for 97 of those years. He was succeeded by his eldest son Din, who became King Din I.His younger son Borin had a son called Farin, who is the ancestor to Gimli. Farin : Born in Third Age 2560. Died in 2803.Son of Borin.Father to Fundin and Groin. Grin : An important figure in the royal genealogies of the Dwarves,Grin was the grandson of Borin, the younger son of King Nin II and so could claim direct descent from Durin the Deathless himself. In his turn, Grin was father to in and Glin and uncle to Balin and Dwalin, all four of whom travelled on the Quest of Erebor.Through his son Glin, he was also grandfather to Gimli Elf-friend of the Company of the Ring. For all his genealogical importance, though, we know almost nothing of his life. His dates of birth and death, though, show us that he was alive at the time of Smaug's Sack of Erebor, and the Battle of Nanduhirion twenty-nine years later. It is more than likely that he was present at both these events. Glin : Glin accompanied Bilbo,Thorin II and the company to the Lonely Mountain in Erebor. After the death of Smaug he took part in the final battle, the Battle of Five Armies and survived it.Glin I also came to the Council of Elrond. He wore a belt of silver and a chain of silver and diamonds at the council in Imladris where he met Frodo. He also had grown a very long white beard. Facts : Gimli's father,Glin,is Balin's cousin. |
