Several events came about during the period of American colonial
times. Researcher, Jan Lewis studied the eighteenth century and early
nineteenth century Virginia. She explored the interaction between
class and pessimistic religion with other worldly focus. According
to her, in adopting evangelical religion they did not adopt an authoritarian
mode of child rearing. Lewis noticed a growth in family that changed
human relations in this time period. Lewis's findings suggest that
wealth was an overriding factor in determining the way parents act towards
their children.
