Ismail Merchant on filming a scene at the Cannes Film Festival:""And then all hell broke loose. The crowds started calling Jean-Pierre Aumont''s name as he followed the procession, and Jean-Pierre completely forgot we were shooting the scene for the film. Enthusiastically responding to the crowd, he bounded energetically up the stairs to greet the festival committee at the top. In the film Jean-Pierre as Franz Legendre is an old man recovering from a stroke, but here he was moving like an Olympic athlete. I ran up the stairs to stop him, but it was too late. Jean-Pierre had disappeared into the palais with Jeanne and the jury, and there was no time to look for him in that mass of people."" from The Proprietor, The Screenplay and Story Behind the Film by Ismail Merchant, c.1996 by Merchant Ivory Productions
