PARIS (AP) -- Lionel Jospin has paid tribute to Jean-Pierre Aumont onTuesday, "an actor gifted with great talent, with an acting style that had the mark of distinction" who passed away this morning in Saint-Tropez.

For the Prime Minister, who especially remembers ''le Chat et la Souris'' and ''La Nuit américaine'', Jean-Pierre Aumont ''was able throughout his life, from Julien Duvivier's 'Lac aux Dames' that made him a star, until his last performances on the stage, to lead an exemplary career that combined the movies and the theatre ''A man of conviction and courage, Jean-Pierre Aumont asserted his commitment to the cause of freedom by joining the Free French Forces and fighting the nazis on several fronts'', added M. Jospin in a press release. ''He leaves us with the memory of a man of discretion and elegance; he'll remain for all of us a particularly engaging actor''
