Jean-Pierre Aumont by Airmail
The absent aren't always wrong.
Especially when they're called Jean-Pierre Aumont.
It has already been several weeks since he left us once more and left Paris again for America... His last movie
"The Wicked City" was barely finished (since there were still scenes being shot after he left), when he had to
get back to New York where theatre beckoned.
Indeed, in the last few days, Jean-Pierre Aumont has just created, on Broadway, the English version of his
first play: "L'Empereur de Chine".
We've just received some charming news from him.
Because he's a charming human being.
He could be gone for years and we wouldn't forget him. Better yet, we always find him exactly like we
remembered him.
He always has the same kindness, simple and warm. Nothing goes to his head. No amount of success will ever
change him. And that's something really nice.
Especially when you think about the kind of career he has, that is really a great career.
He began in theatre with Jouvet in "Le Prof d'Anglais", and in movies in the role of the young gigolo in "Jean
de la lune". That brings us back to 1930.
The movies quickly made him a star.
He made movies almost everywhere in Europe and before the war he was the co-star of all the leading ladies of
French cinema.
We saw him with Anny Ondra in "Faut-il les marier?", with Madeleine Ozeray in "Dans les rues", with
Simone Simon in "Lac aux Dames" (that's the movie that definitively established him), with Madeleine
Renaud in "Le Voleur", with Kate de Nagy in "Un jour viendra", with Danielle Darrieux in "Taras-Boulba",
with Annabella in "L'Equipage", with Marcelle Chantal in "La Porte du Large" with Gaby Morlay in "Le
Messager", with Francoise Rosay in "Drole de drame", with Huguette Duflos in "Maman Colibri", with
Corinne Luchaire in "Le Dserteur", etc...
The only ones missing from his list are Edwige Feuillre, Michle Morgan and Viviane Romance.
And the amusing thing is that for his comeback to the French studios, Jean-Pierre Aumont has made a movie
with two foreign stars: his wife Maria Montez and Lili Palmer.
Jean-Pierre Aumont's future seems to be definitely steered toward an international career. There is no doubt
he'll make more movies in Hollywood, in London and elsewhere. We can only hope with a little bit of
selfishness, because we like him so much, that he will also keep his promise: that he'll make at least one movie in
France each year.
Here's what Jean-Pierre tells us in the news he's sending:
-Marie-Christine is a big girl... Think... 3 years old on February 22, 1949...
He also confirms that Maria Montez will probably come back to Paris in February to star with Erich von
Stroheim in "Portrait d'un assassin".
Jean-Pierre was long perceived as being only a juvenile lead. But he showed that he was, in addition to being
an always charming actor, a very gifted writer. In fact, Jean-Pierre just loves his profession and knows it
thoroughly. He's passionate about everything he sets out to do and always brings the maximum of taste to his work.
We don't know yet what "The Wicked City" will be like but we can say that this will really be a Jean-Pierre
Aumont picture, since he not only plays the leading role, but he also was in charge of writing the adaptation and
the dialogues. It was a huge amount of work for him and we hope it will be a great success.
His activities are numerous and he has so much vitality that he is currently writing another play.
Jean-Pierre Aumont has made it. He is a character, and a personality.
