There are quite a few myth cycles and stories that various traditions currently use to explain the seasons. The eight Holy Days (Sabbats) are often seen as spokes on a great wheel. As the Wheel turns, so our attention shifts to the symbols and meanings that we see in the seasons. These stories are a wonderful way for parents to teach their children about the tradition, symbols, and significance of each holiday.
The Child's Craft attempts to bring as many of these myth cycles together as possible. Some Pagan traditions celebrate the battles of the Oak King and the Holly King. In this collection, however, we see the stories of these two kings throughout the year -- not just at the solstices. The Robin and the Wren have served a similar function in Pagan lore, and their stories are written here as well. The Child's Craft looks at Persephone's journeys to and from the Underworld. Many groups use a Goddess and God cycle that is a blend of many different legends.
Whenever possible, I am using the entire myth cycle for the stories. However, many holes have been left in the old legends where information wasn't passed down. (For example: most people have know idea what the Oak and Holly Kings do between the solstices.) In these cases, I am looking to various sources (including my own imagination) to fill in the gaps. I am also hoping to work with other authors in getting permission to use stories they have written for their families or for publication in Pagan magazines.
If you know of a myth cycle that a coven or other group uses, or if you know of any story that I should consider including, please e-mail me with as much information as you have.
