| "Oh yeah! I thought that looked interesting. You up for it?" "I am if you are!" Soon they were sitting in the darkness of the theater. Lynn turned and whispered to him, "I don't think I have any friends as good as you." Even in the dark, she could tell he was smiling. He leaned over, looked her in the eyes, and asked, "Would you be willing to have me as your boyfriend, and not just a friend?" Her heart beating faster, she hesitated before saying, "Sure." The diamond-like glitter in the eyes of each drew them both to each other. Closer, closer, closer until-their lips touched softly. They pulled apart slowly, oblivious to the movie. In a daze, they stared deep into each other's eyes until they realized the lights were on and they were the only ones left in the theater. Brandon took Lynn home. They were both d reading the moment when they would have to go separate ways, but when they embraced, Lynn kissed his cheek, and he stroked her hair, and they went their ways. As soon as she was inside, Lynn was looking for a phone to call Cecile. "Hello?" "Hey. What's up?" "Oh, same old same old. How did the afternoon go?" Lynn's eyes twinkled at the question and the thought of the dark movie theater. "Perfect." "What happened?" Cecile asked breathlessly. "Oh, well, you know...this and that..." "What happened?" "We went to that new movie, I told him something, and, well..." Cecile was startled. "No way! Did he really ask you?" Lynn nodded. "Yeah, it was so perfect..." "You didn't...did you?" "Oh, no! But after he asked me, there was something telling me to lean closer. It was like we both had the same inpulse, because her leaned toward me too. You can gather the rest." "Did he really? Wait a minute! Who kissed who?" "I'm not sure that's the fun of it. We did the same thing at the same time." Cecile sighed loudly. "Well, I did tell you this was probably your chance, didn't I?" "You did." Lynn gazed off lazily. "I've gotta go. Mom needs to make phone call. Later!" "Later." Lynn hung up the phone, ran a hand through her hair, and went downstairs to watch some TV. The evening of the prom, Lynn was decked out in her best. She was only in tenth grade, and so she felt priveliged to go. The night passed by in a flash, and soon Brandon was driving his car up to the Baker's house. He closed his eyes and sat still for a while. Then he turned to Lynn. "Look, we've had a great time together, and I wish it could last. I hate to be the bearer of bad news..." Lynn interrupted him. "You're not dumping me now, are you?" she said, her throat thick. He looked over at her, his teal eyes more serious than they had ever been. "Never. Not after a night like this. We both have stong feelings for each other, and I wish it could last years longer. You know I go to college next year. I'm seventeen, you're fifteen. We can't live together, and it's hard to carry on a relationship, well..." "Don't say it! You don't have to. I knew you would, but please, don't!" Suddenly, sobs shook her body, and she buried her face in the car door. Brandon leaned over, and firmly pulled her to him. "I know, I know. We'll live without each other. It'll be okay. We can still be the best of friends through mail, no matter what. A long-distance relationship is too hard to carry out for starcrossed teenagers. I don't leave for two months yet, we can be a couple until the day I go if you want." "You've made the speech. It might as well be over!" She flung the car door open with angry strength. She trotted up to her room, and buried her face in her pillows and cried. |
