About the Show
|
“In The Now” is an autobiographical piece of Terrylene’s life that portrays a little girl who discovers her womanhood. The performance begins with Terrylene sitting at her desk writing a children’s book. She is dedicating the book to the girl within her. In an instant, the girl appears then disappears! Terrylene chases the girl down and in so doing, takes an honest look at her pain, guilt and anger. How could she be surrounded by so many loved ones and still be hurt? |

How could aperpetuator overpower her into silence? Terrylene explores the confusion of her “secret” and suspicion of people who’ve tried to help her. But, “No, it’s not anyone’s business, is it?” Slowly, through spiritual experiences surrounding the death of her grandmother and the birth of her son, Terrylene is able to heal. Amazingly, through the power of love, Terrylene sees how she is able to forgive. The past can no longer hold her hostage. The chasing of the little girl ends when she walks up to Terrylene and takes her by the hand. The little girl leads Terrylene to a pond where they sit, side by side, and wade their feet in gentle water. Life is indeed good. |

Terrylene breaks the “secret” through experimental American Sign Language expression. We witness a moving story that chronicles Terrylene’s journey from a guarded girl to a woman in wholeness. The performance art piece interweaves storytelling, ASL poetry and monologue. We travel from Terrylene’s mental turmoil to her empowered healing process. |
| Terrylene transcends her victimized experiences of pain and guilt; surviving through anger into a radiant identity of her real self called, “I am.” “In The Now ” is a thought provoking and profound performance that inspires us to see the truth in the power of love. | |

“From
victim to survivor to I AM! gives us deaf people opportunity to honestly
look inside ourselves without being ashamed of our deaf identity. It encourages
hearing people to realize deaf people are survivors not on only one level
and that we share their humanity. I applaud Terrylene’s courage and talent
to do this.” - Ella Mae Lentz, Author, Signing Naturally: ASL Instruction |
