Ground-up salt pork
Doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? Actually, it was a very tasty sandwich (especially once the ketchup and mayonnaise were added.) The taste was not at all like an American hamburger, but nor was the taste unpleasant – salty and savory – so long as I was able to not have my tastebuds "expect" to taste "hamburger" I was impressed with the sandwich. Thinking about it now, I wonder if it was made from ground-up ham and not salt pork.
