Wrote two New Testament epistles

    

b. Traditional Information

          Late traditions speak of visits to Britain and Gaul

Was crucified upside-down in Rome during Neronian persecution

   (AD. 64—68)

 

2. Andrew

     a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Is supposed to have preached in Scythia, Asia Minor, and Greece

Was crucified at Patras in Achaia

 

3. JAMES SON OF ZEBEDEE

     a. Biblical Information

Was executed by Herod Agrippa I

 

4. John

     a. Biblical Information

          Participated in healing of lame man at temple

          Followed up Philip’s work in Samaria

          Was exiled late in life on island of Patmos

          Wrote Gospel, three epistles, and Revelation

 

b. Traditional Information

     Ministered at Ephesus

          Is said to have rebuked early Gnostic Cerinthus

          Died a natural death in Ephesus AD. 100

 

5. Philip

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Is said to have been crucified in Hierapolls in Asia Minor

 

6. Matthew

     a. Biblical Information

          Wrote Gospel that bears his name

    

b. Traditional Information

Conflicting traditions place him in Ethiopia, Parthia, Persia, and Macedonia      

 

7. Thomas

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Supposedly preached in Babylon

Strong early tradition tells of his founding churches and eventually being martyred in India

 

8. Bartholomew

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Is supposed to have accompanied Philip to Hierapolis

Was martyred after ministry in Armenia

 

9. James, Son of Alphaeus

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Has been persistently confused with James the brother of Jesus in early church tradition

Possibly ministered in Syria

 

10. Thaddaeus

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Has often been confused with Jude the brother of Jesus

Tradition associates his ministry with Edessa

 

11. Simon the Zealot

a. Biblical Information

          Nil

 

b. Traditional Information

Variously (and dubiously) associated with Persia, Egypt, Carthage, and Britain

 

12. Judas Iscariot

     a. Biblical Information

          Hanged himself after betraying Jesus
