| In a short time, the clay doll returned and took his place on the mantle before the old sculptor could notice he was gone. But when the craftsman picked up the figurine that morning he found grit and grass ground into the clay. This concerned him, so he asked, "Little doll, did you leave the protection of the porch?" "Of course not," the doll snapped with embarrassment. "You make the rules. I could never break your rules." "Those rules are made for your benifit," the craftsman replied. "I have made them because I care for you and know what is best for you. Now let me get you cleaned off for today's adventure." |
| One morning in the yard held so many pleasures that the clay doll decided to go out again the next day. The morning was not quite as cool, but the doll was excited to find more real adventures. His wanderlust led the clay doll out farther than he had gone before. The morning broke and the sun had come out unexpectedly and the little doll rushed back to the porch as quickly as he could on legs that had become stiff. But the doll did not notice the stiffness. He was worried that the old man would find that he had left the porch again and broken tha rules. |
