Gerd reported ther is $2701 in the bank account. There is still a $3 service charge to get the copies of the used checks with the statement. Peggy will find out if we need a tax ID number to open an account in a new bank because we are non-profit.
President Karen made suggestions for activities for the year, to give back to the community. March 3 there is a 1.25 mile walkathon for the Broward Humane Society. They provide a website for us to advertise our lodge. Everyone can make donations and bring a pet. Else has Norwegian flags to use while walking. Karen will get Sun Sentinel to cover the event. http://www.humanebroward.com/Walk2006/index2006.htm
In September we can do a toy drive for kids in distress. They also do advertising for our lodge if we participate. In October there is a walk or fashion show for breast cancer awareness. Website? Karen want everyone to think about other things our lodge can participate in. She also suggested doing a 15-minute story time for kids at each meeting. Possibly in Norwegian. Suggestions of having an Elvis impersonator came up.
As far as the newsletter Karen suggests highlighting a (new, old or young) member about them and their ideas and reasons for joining SON. Start a mailing list (list serve) with blurbs for members who wants to participate. Jan Nataas suggested ballroom dancing in Boca Raton for $12. Laila will put in newsletter a request for people to participate in a play. Laila will check on Grieg (since this is the 2007 theme) DVD from SON and other things from them and the Norwegian tourist bureau. Karen has projector and Grieg Music. Gerd has music also. Laila will add to newsletter and website that people can call if they need a ride for the dinners.
We discussed new locations for our board meetings and member meetings/dinners. Some of the ideas that came up are Karen's home and office, Pine Island Country Club, Signature Grand, Christine Lee's, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Broward County and Women's Chamber of Commerce, Community Centers in Sunrise and Plantation, Holiday Park. Karen will set up questions for use to use when we call for prices.
We decided on this preliminary schedule of events:
January: Installation of Officers with stew dinner.
February: Grieg anniversary theme and Valentine's Day with salmon dinner.
March: Cultural and Animal Awareness Month with open sandwiches dinner
April: BBQ Picnic in the park
May: 17-Mai celebration at President Karen's house (pool and BBQ)
September: Cod Dinner
October: Halloween/Masquerade/Octoberfest with meatballs
November: Thanksgiving celebration with food to be determined.
December: Christmas Party with roast Pork.
Everyone is welcome to help set up tables at 9AM on the 27th. Next board meeting has been set for Wednesday, February 7th, 2007 7PM at Karen's office at 1876 N. University Drive, 2nd floor.
