| Thanks to Scandinavia Friendship Quilt |
| Monday, April 18, 2005 The "Thanks to Scandinavia Institute," presented a program at FAU, Boca Raton to a standing room only crowd of about 300. The theme of the evening was "How ordinary citizens preformed extraordinary acts of courage in the face of evil." The Institute was formed in part by the late pianist and comedian Victor Borge to spread the word of how Scandinavians rescued thousands of Jews during World War II. The event began with a report on the history of World War II in Scandinavia by Dr. Christine van der Zanden, who explained how the Nazi occupation of Norway was more difficult than in neighboring Denmark, due to Norway's strategic location. Dr. van der Zanden's history lesson was followed by a video titled, The Danish Solution, narrated by Garrison Keillor, and then by the personal and moving stories of three survivors of the Nazi terror in Scandinavia.. The program concluded with the presentation of a friendship quilt created by 5th graders at Eisenhower Elementary School. |
