| Past Events Saturday, January 22, 2005 Dr. Truls Johannessen, professor of chemical oceanography at the University of Bergen and a guest research scientist at the University of Miami and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), gave a talk about the weather, how prediction technology has changed over the past 100 years, and where it may go in the future. The Professor discussed global warming and the oceans' role in weather and climate. Of interest was that WWII D-Day weather prediction and Eisenhower's "Go-or-No-Go" decision were in the hands of a Norwegian. Interesting Fact: Temperatures on the west coast of Norway are usually milder due to the same Gulf Stream which flows off our Florida coast. In winter the surface water temperature near Bergen is about 8 degrees C. or 47 degrees F. |
