The Common Religious Factor in Genocides | ||||||||
The Cross and The Genocide is a useful website in looking at the religious perspective in Rwanda. The Hutu had support from the Catholic church to kill the Tutsi. This article talks about how even nuns got involved in killing people and burning people alive. If we look through the rest of the links, we could find a pattern. This article also makes references to the holocaust. Getting back to the topic, the relationship we find is that religion plays a major role in genocides. Either the oppressors condone their own behavior through religious justification, are backed by a certain religious institution, or the victims are being punished, in a sense, for their religious beliefs. Peter Singer-ONE WORLD In Peter Singer's book, he talks about genocide as a biblical phenomenon. He basically says that genocide is nothing new and points out examples from the Bible. Some could assume that since genocide is in the Bible, there are cases where genocide is acceptable. This leaves us with many complications with our religious beliefs. I doubt the majority agree that genocide is ok, but then we need to find a way to explain this. |
