1950-1990

Assessment Task

The next unit that we will cover in the class is the decades from 1950 through the 1990’s.  The unit that we will be doing will cover the Assessment task of the Graduation Rule.  The task will consist of you breaking into groups and being given a decade and you will have to do a presentation on that decade.  There are many fun and exciting things that happen during this time period that you will be presenting on.  Some things consist of the Cold War, Vietnam, the Korean War, Oil embargo and the Persian Gulf War.  You don’t have to do only the wars in the decade, but you can pick some other things like some of the fads and fashions of the decade.  You will also have a chance to talk with some of the local VFW vets in our community and have a chance to interview them.

The requirements of the task consist of a timeline, presentation and a written reaction.  It must be an accurate timeline and include: key events from the decade; actions of important people during the decade; the contributions of key historical people during the decade, and cause and effect relationship of events over an extended period of time.

The presentation must be a past event from the point of view of local community member.  It will also be an historical account of an event using primary and secondary sources, it will also have an accurate description of how technology has changed the lives of people in the home, at work, in transportation and in communication.  The presentation will have accurate examples of conflict among individuals, groups and nations and examples of cooperation among individuals, groups and nations.  Lastly it will have accurate examples of interdependence among individuals, groups and nations.

The last thing that is required is a written report of your experiences.  The written report will answer questions like what did you learn from this project about your town, its history, about the person you interviewed, about yourself?  Do you like to study history this way?  Why or why not?  What was the best thing about this project?  The part you disliked, if any?

Don’t’ get to worried about all this we will take our time and I will be there to answer whatever questions that you may have.  I will also give you an example of what the everything will look like when I demonstrate one to you of the 1940’s.  You will be broken up into groups that I will select and I will also give the groups the decade that they will present on.  There is no way around this so don’t ask me to change groups so you can work with your friends.
