| Tuol Sleng, or S-21 was a school that had been transformed into a prison, in Phnom Penh, and served as the Khmer Rouge's premier security institution, specifically designed for the interrogation and extermination of anti-Angkar elements. From 1975 to '78, an estimated 12,000 men, women and children lost their lives here. |
| One of the worst attrocities in modern times took place in the fields that lie a few kilometers outside of Phnom Penh. Thousands of native Cambodians ruthlessly lost their lives at the hands of their own "brainwashed" bretheren. Many of the victims, old and young, were killed by blows to the head, in order to save bullets, and their remains dumped in mass graves. The memorial (pictured to the left) has approximately fifteen to twenty floors filled with the skulls excavated from the graves in the surrounding area. A sobering reminder how fragile and cheap life can be at the hands of a few tyrants. |
