I made a very brief trip to China on September 8-12th.  It was during Chusak, a Korean holiday.   I only had a few days, but with the help of a travel agency and guide the group I was with actually saw a good amount.
Tour groups are not my favorite way of traveling in a new country, however, with the time I had, it turned out to be the best way of seeing the most I could in the short amount of time.
I flew into Beijing, a city that rivals the size and population of Seoul, South Korea.  Within a day I found myself walking up a steep section of The Great Wall.
The Great Wall by far was the highlight of the trip for me.  It was truely amazing standing at a peak of a small mountain and gazing at the numerous, winding sections of the wall that traverse the rugged mountains of China, starting in the East and going all the way west to the Gobi desert.  The man-power that it took to build this is truely a boggling thing to comprehend.
Within the remaining days, I got the chance to see Tiannemen Square, Mao's tomb, the Forbidden City (where the Emperor used to live and conduct his affairs of office) and feast on many different Chinese delicasies, including the famous Beijing duck.
China, on the whole seemed to be a bit more cold and serious in the way of people's moods and attitudes.  Not many smiles on the average people I would meet on the streets.
