Back to Western U.S.A.
It took me 29 years to finally make it to the West coast.  Late June, 2001 I flew into San Francisco to visit an old friend for five days, before heading home for my summer vacation.
This city is truely a melting pot of culture and personalities.
The music, art and literary geniouses that lived and thrived in the city by the bay, are countless.  I could still feel that energy resounding in the streets.
My personal mecca was the Haight/Ashbury section of town.  Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and a host of other musical talent from the '60's all called this place home.  The streets are still filled with head shops, 60's memorabilia, and an ecclectic group of old hippies, burnouts, and wanna be's.  However, it's also adopted a Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream shop and a Starbuck's.  I think I just felt Hendrix roll over...
This city has a ton of things to do.  Sailing, fishing, hiking and seeing all of the sights, are a few popular activities.
While I was here, I hit a number of really good restaurants.  Just walking down an average street, I could choose Italian, Thai, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican and occasionally even saw a McDonald's.
The variety of food really mirrors the multi-ethnic flavor of the city.
