A convert from Toronto, Canada; William proved faithful enough to have been called by revelation as Counselor to the Prophet.
However, within a few years he first began to argue Church doctrine and not long after was suspected for scheming to kill the Prophet when Joseph publicly stated, "we have a Judus in our midst," and William was soon excommunicated from the Church. He and his brother Wilson Law started an anti-Mormon newspaper called "The Nauvoo Expositor" which violated the Nauvoo City Charter for religious discrimination and was ordered destroyed by the mayor, Joseph Smith. This event precipitated the Prophet's arrest and assassination at Carthage Jail. Willard Richards testified that William was in the mob that perfomed the deed.
It is said that William died a still bitter and hateful man, at the age of eighty-two.
