        A poor convert from England, a shoemaker by trade, learned of the Church from a piece of torn leather, converted, and on the voyage to Zion in America he contracted small pox and was nearly thrown overboard, but throgh the grace of a priesthood blessing he was healed.
          He served faithfully in the Church and was called as Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric and was put in charge to make sure the Salt Lake Temple finished on time. He was then called as Assistant to Temple President Lorenzo Snow, and soon was called into the First Presidency of the Church by President Joseph F. Smith.
