First mayor of Nauvoo, Illinois; Comander of the Nauvoo Legion; and Assistant President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was warned by the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith, not to expect exaltation, but to only approval from God. Highly influential to the early days of Nauvoo, including the writing of the Nauvoo Charter. However, he soon fell into immorality and his heart filled with bitterness and envy for authority. It wasn't long before he was associating with enemies to the Church to seeking to take the life of the Prophet and was forced to resign as mayor and was excommunicated. Bennett then exploded by leading a rampage against the Church and the Prophet Joseph. This vile creature died a despised traitor to all that is good and decent at the age of sixty-three. |
