Son of Patriarch Hyrum Gibbs Smith, Elder Smith was granted Emeritus status October 4, 1979 for reasons of health and age. The position of Patriarch to the Church was retired and no one has since been so named.
Now well into his nineties, he serves as President of the Joseph Smith, Senior and Lucy Mack Smith Foundation, and as represting the Smith family, accompanied President Gordon B. Hinckley to upstate New York for the dedication of the Palmyra New York Temple.
