Married Elizabeth Snow, daughter of Apostle Erastus Snow. Ordained to the Quorum of the Seventy, served two missions to the Lamanites, eventually serving as a Government Indian Agent. He was later called to preside over the Saints in Mexico.
He served in the Quorum of the Twelve for twelve years, at the time of his passing, First Counselor in the First Presidency at the age of eighty-two.
