Although born only a few miles away from the Prophet Joseph Smith, he would not meet the Prophet until a few days before the martyrdom took place. Especially well educated, his services were a great contribution to the Saints. He served as Assistant Counselor to Brigham Young, two-time European Mission President, and journeyed all over Europe, Asia, and the Holy Land with fellow Apostles. Later he was called as Brigham Young's personal secretary, and even served prison time in defense of his brothren. However, years later he was found in transgression and his fellow Apostles were forced to excommunicate him from the Church. He was rebaptized two years later and died in full fellowship. His headstone is not present at his grave, but he is surrounded by family markers. |
