KATE HOVEY
Ancient Voices: Bringing the Greeks to Life in the
Classroom with Poetry and the Art of the Mask
During this lively
workshop participants will learn how to use Readers’ Theater, poetry and the
20,000-year-old art of the mask to bring the gods and goddesses to life in the
classroom. The presentation includes a masked performance by the author,
Readers’ Theater choral demonstrations, poetry exercises and a mask-making
activity. Participants will construct
poster board replicas of the large copper and leather masks used by the author
in performance. These inexpensive, easy-to-make art pieces work well in a
variety of classroom projects, enriching the studies of Latin and Greco-Roman
mythology.
Kate Hovey is the author
of three books of poetry for young people, Arachne Speaks, Ancient Voices and Voices
of the Trojan War, published by Margaret K. McElderry
Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster.
She received the 2001 Marion Vannett Ridgway
Honor Book Award for her first picture book, Arachne Speaks. Her most recent
work, Voices of the Trojan War, was
named a 2005 Notable Book by the National Council of Teachers of English. She
performs and conducts workshops at schools and conferences around the
country.
