| I sat down at my keyboard and ran my fingers over the keys. I played a few notes and smiled. My eyes closed and my fingers played. They raced over the keys, playing sweet, soft music. I felt someones hand on my shoulder. I stopped my playing and the person behind me cringed. Dont stop, the person pleaded. I dont like playing for people Nick. How do you know me? Your voice. Oh. So, how did you learn? And can you teach me? I smiled and felt the keys underneath my fingers. I can teach you if youll help me with something. He laughed but said he would. You want to learn that badly? Of course. Im glad. It was difficult yet easy for me. But, I have one problem, everything I play, I either remember or make up. You see, I cant see. What? I laughed and reached out for Nicks hand. He placed his hand in mine and I placed them on the keys. When I was younger, I was in a terrible accident and lost my vision. Woah, Im sorry. Oh Nick, please dont feel sorry for me. Being blind is actually something good. Instead of seeing the sun, I can feel it beat down on my face and skin. Instead of seeing the flowers bloom, I can smell their sweetness. Instead of seeing the birds or bugs, I can hear their chirps or calls. Please Nick, dont feel sorry for me. Of course. So, you have a good grasp on things. What do you need help with? I took a deep breath and laid my hand over his. I began playing a couple of cords. The sound was dark, gothic, in a sense. But, slowly, I made his finger play happier music. You see Nick, there are many things I havent gotten to experience and I want you to show me in exchange for learning. I heard him suck in a breath and got scared. I took my hand off of his and stood up. Im sorry. If you want to learn, you dont have to show me anything. Just come back here tomorrow. I grabbed my skirt and quickly fled the room. I could hear Nick calling me, but didnt care. I slipped on a stone and felt myself falling. My hand and knee scraped against the concrete and I yelled out. I felt someone pick me up and carry me to a chair. Nick sat down and sat me on his lap. I was going to say, I would love to show you everything. He wiped the tears away and grabbed my hand. His lips briefly touched it and I smiled. Next time, be careful. Im glad you care Nick. I do. Unfortunately, the guys and I have to go, but I promise, Ill be back tomorrow. Ill be here. I could feel him smile. A date then. Of course. He picked me up and gave me a hug. Bye Theresa. Bye Nick. I sat down at the piano and played whatever came to mind. I felt someone step into the room yet I went on playing. The person sat down next to me and I could smell his cologne. Hi Nick. How. Your cologne. How are you today? Just fine. Anxious to start learning. I laughed but reached out for his hand. I put his fingers on the keys and put my hand over his. I gently pressed and heard the soft music bellow out. This is a G. I pushed another one and told him it was an A. I let him just play those two notes. Let them in your heard and mind. Once you do, you can feel the difference more then you can hear it. Remember that when you play, you play what youre feeling. Got it. I smiled and nodded my head. I pushed another finger and wont for another 45 minutes. I told him the different notes for the different sets. He played those and kept repeating them. Slowly, he stopped and I smiled. He turned and I could feel his eyes on me. What? How did you learn to play? I spread my hands over the keys and played a few bars. I was little and loved the sound a piano made. So, I was just pushing keys when a teacher heard me. She asked me if I knew what I was playing. As a little girl, I had no clue. She told me I was playing a section of a piece that Mozart wrote. I told her I heard it once and tried to duplicate it. From there on, she showed me everything. Wow, thats quite cool. Kevin would love to play with you. I glanced in his direction and smiled at him. Wanna take a walk with me? This the second part of the deal? Yeah. See, I need a cane to go out and I dont like having it. So, I figured you wouldnt mind taking walks with me or something. Not in the least. He grabbed my hand and we walked down the sidewalk. You know, Ill be honest, Im glad I met ya. Youre just not saying that? I asked, laughing it off. Never. Youre a very cool person and I dont mind spending my time in getting to know you better. I smiled and we went on talking about our lives, our futures and what we wanted out of life. We walked back to the house and said he had to go. He gave me a hug and walked out the door. The weeks flew by and Nick and I seemed to be as close as you could as friends. We trusted each other with everything. How he started feeling alone with Brian being married, how he felt the group was slowly slipping away from him. Though, he knew that wouldnt be happening, it just felt odd for him. How I felt at war with the world, trying to fit in. How alone I felt, being in that house with my parents always gone. It was a week before he was supposed to leave for the tour when everything came out. We were on my back porch, just talking, like we usually did, when he grabbed my hand and kissed it. I can be open, right? Nick asked. Of course. What is it Nick? Im liking you. More than a friend, Theresa. I stared at him, shocked. Nick, you can have anyone, any girl, why me? Cause Ive seen the any girl and I dont like them. Ive dated them, and know how they really are. I want someone I can trust, someone who understands me. Nick, I like you a lot, youre one of my best friendsI cant date you Nick. I mean, what would the media think? They would blow this up! |
