Theresa said she needed to talk to me and here we are.� �Yes, but you guys are also standing outside a baby store.� �Well, she�s pregnant,� Brian said. I just smiled and received the hug that Leighanne gave me. �I�m totally happy for you Theresa,� she said. �Thanks girl. Look, I think we need to head out. AJ is going to be home soon and I know you guys are getting ready to leave soon. I�ll see you guys later.� �What�s on your mind girl?� Megan asked, sitting down beside me at the table. �I think I�m falling in love with Howie.� �That can�t be good,� she said. �What can�t be good,� AJ said, coming into the kitchen. �Theresa�s in love.� �Who�s in love?� Howie asked, sitting at the table. �Nothing. Bye.� I walked down the sidewalk kicking the rocks in my path. �This is world is starting to suck. How can you tell someone you love them when you�re not even sure he loves you back. Let alone likes you. Gosh, when they made love, they needed to make a handbook. Things would be easier. You can still learn on your own. You just know what that person is feeling as well,� I thought to myself. I turned down the street and looked around me. �Oh, this can�t be good.� I turned around and looked for the street sign. �You lost girl?� a male voice asked me. I turned around and saw a man standing there. �Um, not lost pre say, just confused,� I answered, slowly walking away. �Maybe we can help you,� the guy said. �No, really, I�ll be fine, thanks for the offer though.� �You sure? We never mind helping a pretty young lady find her way home.� �Oh no, I know where I am.� �Then tell me, pretty lady.� �Um, I�m at, um, 29th street,� I said, finally noticing the sign. �Look Chuck, she can read. She�s smart too,� a younger guy said. �Um, yeah, I went to school.� �Yeah, and I�m sure you�re brother is sending you to college to, right Ms. McLean,� the guy named Chuck said. �Oh, don�t looked shock, of course I know who you are. Kinda far from your side of town, ain�t ya?� �Yeah, and I was headed there right now.� �Now wait, I would sure like to know more about you,� Chuck said, grabbing my arm. I tried pulling away and only hurt myself in the process. �Be nice and nothing is going to happen to you. Just do as I say,� he roared into my ear. I flinched and nodded my head. �On the ground.� I slowly kneeled down and just shut my eyes. �Now�� �Now you can leave her alone. She�s with me and you can certainly let her go. Trust me, I can take her home and safely.� I looked up and saw Dan standing there. �Oh fuck no, I�d rather stay here and take my chances then be caught dead anywhere near you,� I yelled back at him. He stalked over to me and yanked me by my arm. �Shut up and get in the fuckin� car, you slut.� He shoved me to the car and I slowly got in. He pulled the door open for me and shoved me inside. �Thank you for watching her,� Dan said. He got in and drove off. I sat against the door, just watching the things pass outside the window. I finally noticed that we were going to a park. �Where the fuck are you taking me?� �None of your damn business.� I just rolled my eyes and stared back out the window. He finally stopped and pulled me out of the car, right behind him. We walked over to this place by the lake and he pulled me down next to him. �I told you, you would regret treating me the way you did.� He violently shoved me on the ground and covered his body with mine. �I think I need to teach you what respect is, you fuckin� bitch.� �Actually, I think you need to learn respect,� Howie said. He pulled Dan off of me and punched him hard. I saw Dan clutch his nose and fall down. Howie came over and watched as Dan tried to get back up. Once he did, Howie punched him again, this time, fully breaking his jaw. I winced and turned away. I heard Howie punch him one more time and then I heard a �thump� right next to me. �He�s out.� I just looked up at Howie and nodded my head. �You okay,� he asked, pulling me in his arms. I just nodded my head yet again. He rocked me back and forth, waiting for my tears to come. He stopped and just stared at me. �Why aren�t you crying?� �How can I cry?� �Cause something bad was going to happen to you.� �Yes, but..um, never mind. Look, can we go home.� �Not until you tell me what you were going to say.� �Howie, I�m in love with you.� I saw him stare at me, a blank look in his eyes. �What?� �Theresa, that�s flattering, but, I don�t want to screw up the friendship we have. You know that I did that to a lot of my friendships�you�re just to special, I don�t want to hurt you like that.� �I understand. Please, can we go home?� He nodded his head and helped me up. We walked over to his car and he helped me inside. I stared at the window, hoping and praying the tears wouldn�t fall just yet. And once we arrived at my house, I jumped out of the car and raced up the stairs, locking myself in my room. Two months later, I was at the computer table working on my next story. I waddled over to my cd player and put in my favorite cd. I hit shuffle and repeat. �Remember when/ We never needed each other/ The best of friends/ Like sister and brother/ We understood/ We'd never be/ Alone� I cringed as the song started and hit the �next� button. |
