I dont know. I just want Brian home. Why sho8uld you be so damn lucky. None of us were, Shannon said. I know. Im sorry. What do you want me to do? Leave him? Kill him? Actually, nothing, Megan said. Why? Itll get you guys off of my back. Yes, but only for so long. Rhoney, you have company, Theresa said. I slowly got out of my chair and opened the door. Can I help you sir? May I come in maam? I opened the door wider and nodded my head. Let me first tell you ladies that your men served proudly. All the women smiled their thanks. Mrs. Captain Rhoney Littrell, on the 11th of December, 1941, your husband was running over a very dangerous piece of land, trying to save many men. I regret to inform you that Captain Brian Thomas Littrell is MIA, missing in action. I opened my eyes wide and leaned against Theresas waiting body. Im very sorry, the man said. He saluted and rolled away. Who was that? Megan asked. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, I answered. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ... and that gentleman is what happened. I felt the tears slip down my face and gazed at each of the men. Each man had tears in their eyes or slipping down their face. Thank you for sharing this with us Uncle Brian, Lawerence said. I know Im dying, but I had to tell you about that time. Each man was brave and served his country proud. And never be ashamed of either your father or your mother. Yes sir, they all said. I just smiled and watched as all five women stepped inside. I nodded my head and they walked over to their sons. There is something I never shared with you. I had to read all these, so I do ask your forgiveness. I reached over to my dresser by my bed and grabbed a small box. I opened it and glanced inside. Before each man shipped, including myself, we wrote notes to our families. Here, on my deathbed, is not the time to read these. I believe you know when its best. I smiled at them and shoved them out the door. Rhoney? Yes Brian? I love you. Again, you have an advantage over the other women. You got to hear me say it before I passed away. I love you. And with that, I slipped away. Rhoney stood by Brians bed and watched as he died. No! she screamed. The four other women came rushing in. They want to her and held her. Its time Rhoney, Megan said. No, hes supposed to live, she said. Rhoney, non ours did. Its only fair hes with this brothers, Shannon said. I know. Did I tell you that after he came back, we purposely had no more kids. We hated the fact that God took all but him. Rhoney, that was a huge sacrifice to make, Maryann said. Yes, it was. But we all would have done the same, Theresa said. The women all looked a like. Dressed in black and veils. In a circle they sat, waiting to read their notes. Since mine was first to go, Ill read mine. Dearest Maryann, Each new day, you lite up my life. Im so very proud to call you mine. And yet, I know therell be a day when we will live without each other. Heaven forbid if that say is soon. But, if I die soon, I pray you are strong and I pray you carry on. And you shall always be with me. Always Yours, Captain Nickolas G. Carter Well, going in order, mine would be next, Shannon said. Dear Shannon, You know how much I love you. And how much I love Bobby. I just pray that youll have the strength to carry on. And if the Lord decides to take me, you and Bobby shall be the last thing I see. And I will wait for you. Love You Always, Captain Kevin S. Richardson And now mine, Megan said. Megan, My love, When God sent you to me, he answered a life long dream. I never thought a man could love a woman do much, but each new day, my love grows for you. And the kids are truly wonderful blessings sent from above. Remember that I will always be there. Forever Yours, Captain Alexander J. McLean Well, now Im scared. Mine would be next, Theresa said. Mi amor, From day one, you have been a joy in my life. I thank God for granting me my wish. You, and the kids, are all I ever need in my life. When times get tough, remember you will always have my heart. Ill be waiting for you. Te Amo, Captain Howard D. Dorough |
