Aarising (meaning Asian Arising) is a label devoted to Asian artists from all genres. This doesn't mean that all of the music is based on Asian culture, but rather Asian artists playing the music they like. The motives aren't politically based, but they make no bones about it...they want to get Asian artists the recognition they deserve.

Small Boston label, trying to do something with the scene there (the newer scene, not the old, lumpy, Del Fuegos, bar-band scene) but not particularly successful to date.
Recently resurrected, Ace Of Hearts was the premiere Boston label in the early to mid 80's - Mission Of Burma, The Lyres, The Neats. The back catalog is great (even though all the Burma stuff went to Taang and Ryko) but their recent releases are a bit weak in comparison.
Aderci has released three cassettes and two CDs (including the brand-new "Pip the Yellow Pup Sees the U.S.A.") by alterna-gods Saturated Fat, as well as cassette releases by the ultra lo-fi O.C. band The Discipline. Coming soon: a 20-song EP from The Secondhands (the world's shortest band), and projects by 40-WT (Keith from Saturated Fat) and The Rocky Mazzarella Experience. They'll gladly accept demos, listen to them, and reply. Maybe they'll even give out some big, fat recording contracts (yeah, right).

Ajax has been many things to date, but it's currently the re-release headquarters for the Jefferies brothers, Peter and Graeme. The label's own releases are generally good but hard to classify, but the distribution/mail-order side of things is the real key to Ajax' popularity. Up to #16, one of the consistently best mail order catalogs in the US and probably the world, with lots of New Zealand imports to keep the masses happy. Catalog is free for the asking, but send Tim a couple stamps or something - make his life a little easier. Unfortunately, a catalog is not available on-line. Perhaps in the future.

This is one subsidiary of the Bomp group of labels, so if you're looking for them, look under large BOMP.
"Music for the Proletariat" is the slogan here, and John Yates stands behind it with solid hardcore-loud music tendencies. I like a lot of their stuff. My friend, Jen loves them. A recent series of singles called "Emergency Broadcast Systems" has been great, as have earlier comps and singles featuring Fiddlehead, Phleg Camp, and Fuel.
Al's Bar have released a live compilation of pop/punk/indie bands playing at AL'S BAR (yep, there's a club too) the first release features the Spent Idols, Flourescein, Bottom 12, Texas Terri, Popdefect, Tvtv$, Touchcandy, Snair, The Humpers, Lutefisk, Extra Fancy, 1000 Mona Lisas & Mother Tongue. AlternaKids is certainly a well placed indie label in the thriving Chapel Hill area, but not quite another Merge, at least it wouldn't appear so. The label specializes in alternative music for kids, rather than the stuff that gets churned out by dinosaurs, of the purple variety I guess. I haven't heard anything but with one cassette with songs called Hardley A Clown In The Sky and I Wanna Iguana this has just got to be ace!

Founded by Jello Biafra, AT has had problems finding worthwhile bands of late but anyone with that kind of a back catalog (all the DK's stuff, for example) is going to do just fine. But, this label really seems to be working hard to establish itself as t he worst indie-label in America at the present moment, though new LPs from Neurosis and Zeni Geva might be turning it around again.

A small d.i.y label that is focused on putting out records, and using all of the profits to put out more records. Still just really getting off of the ground, have put out two good albums by locals Bomb Fetish and Decoy (both of which are political punk bands). Have just been on a binge and signed on 4 more bands, although they haven't said who they are yet. (It's rumoured that The $ellout$ may be one). Good music, and this label is definitely a labour of love for all involved. They also distribute zines and tapes for others.

Not just an "Olympia label". This is punk/HC central for disillusioned 17-year-old skaters (and their pals who don't skate but still like this music). Check out their single with Dissent (Amity #6) - it makes me jump around the room even at 3am with no caffeine in my system. They also have a catalog of even more punk/HC stuff from other labels.
Did some early 11th Dream Day singles, a God's Acre single, too. Are they still out there?
Record Label and Mail Order Company in the eastern part of Germany. They mainly keep punk and hardcore stuff in store and have released three albums on CD. Two by Dritte Wahl, "Fasching In Bonn" and "Auge um Auge", and one by Dog Food Five, "My Degeneration". They are very keen to promote the releases (straight punk) and to get in contact with radio-stations etc. and they do this for punk's sake. Nice people!

Am Rep has succeeded in rebuilding a noisy scene in Minneapolis and elsewhere with its collection of bands - Halo of Flies, Hammerhead, Tar, Surgery, Vertigo, Cosmic Psychos, and more (I realize that most of the named bands aren't from MN, but bear with me...). I wouldn't be surprised to find Erik Lindgren on the internet one of these days...geez, looky there, he is! There are also some compilation albums floating around, and Lindgren made a fine contribution to the Voxx compilation "Beyond The Calico Wall" under the name "Demons of Negativity". A small southern hardcore/punk label. Their best band to date, Tonka, has split and reformed as Ass Factor 4. There's a single from Tonka, a comp (Stupid By The Grace Of God), and maybe more. nice kids trying to make things happen, particularly in South Carolina (home of the Tonka kids), a pretty desolate place for indie rock of any sort.
This is a rather diversified label, with 10" records from fireworks & shiva the destroyer (split) and comet. Also has several 7" records, including Offense A.D., Record Player, and two from Not My Son. Write or email for current catalog & prices. Black Pumpkin releases a wide variety of stuff from artists such as The Family Jewels on the more laid back, melodic end of things up through the edgy guitar of The Fiendz and Dog Pound (no, not the Dr. Dre et al project), and Lazarus Effect's electronic industrial right up to the definitely metal Hades and Snag. There's pretty much something for everyone here.

Small label, more on the punk side of Olympia, and sticking to local talent for the most part (Creep, Silkworm, Honeybucket, and a great compilation LP It's The Water). They don't normally solicit demo tapes but will at least listen to it. Blueprint tries to support bands from western NY. While they don't discourage demo tapes, if you are not from the northeast at least we usually cannot help you even if we worship your band. However, they always write back and if they like you they'll try to set up a show for you if you want. Blueprint is fully independent and they have four releases out after their first year. They also run an 8-track independent studio.

As if that wasn't enough for you, you can also still get the original Bong Load cassette from Muzza Chunka and their first full length release, the Quagmire CD from Grimace. Marten of Grimace is now in another Bong Load act, the wonderfully catchy and sorta heavy Crutch. Other bands you can find here are Fu Manchu, Wool, My Favorite Martian, Vitamade, Lutefisk and others. We're small. As an indie record label, we don't have major label budgets. What we do have is a great team of creative music industry savvy people who are dedicated to producing good music, regardless of musical style or genre. Our creative musical community includes performing musicians, sound engineers, music producers, music recording studios, music publicists, graphic designers, session players, songwriters, arrangers and other musical artists who work cooperatively to deliver the best music possible.
Our mandate here at Borderland Records is to help musical artists build sustainable careers. Our profits go directly back into developing new Canadian musical acts and producing new music.

This is a tiny label run by Peter S. Larson. The label has thus far been very well focused geographically on the Michigan scene and musically on extremily lo-fi, buzzy avant-noise. The label's flagship band is the unknown Couch. Two of the other bands, Prehensile Monkey-tailed Skink and Cornelius Gomez borrow at least one of the Couch boys, so the whole label has that inbred, small town feeling. The label has been branching out, and the most recent catalogue advertises stuff from Chicago's infamous Punk Jazz monsters, the Flying Luttenbachers, and Math, Chicago's noise-folk primitivists, as well as a Mr. Tatsuya Yoshida (who may be the same person who plays with Japanoise turntable destroyers Gerogerigegege and in the Michigan/Chicago supergroup, Cornelius Gomez).

Bullseye Records was formed in 1985 as an imprint for Toronto band Moving Targetz (Targetz. Bullseye. Get it?). Along with that came the motto they use to this day: 'If It's A Bullseye, It's Gotta Be A Hit'. Moving Targetz has been the primary source of material for the past decade with Bullseye releasing their 5 EPs and 2 LPs between 1985 and 1991. As well, Targetz off-shoot act Swedish Fish also released two 7" singles and one cassette LP between 1985 and 1988...Founding member of Targetz and Swedish Fish was Simon Bedford-James who released a Bullseye LP 'Shopping' as his alter ego Simon Truth & The Last Band in 1991. Simon can currently be found in the Toronto MCA Recording act MADE...From 1990 to 1993 Bullseye released 6 independent compilations of Canadian music to satisfy their mandate of helping promote Canadian talent. From these discs came major label deals for such artists as Carl Dixon, King Appratus, The Kings (a comeback), Virginia Storey, Gypsy Soul, Rob Louden, Britton and Victims Of Luxury. Currently, Bullseye have witnessed a new ressurgance in the label with the 1997 releases of a full length CD "Light Years Later" by ex-Klaatu drummer Terry Draper; and the "Steeped" EP by former Top-40 cover band Sharon'SISTER. Bullseye hopes to have a full length album by Sharon'SISTER by year end as well as a double Moving Targetz retrospective. Soon to be released stuff includes Terry & The Twilight Zone 'Live...Years Later: From The Cue To The 'Shoe', and to be spawned after that, a Bullseye 15th anniversary double CD, as well as a Klaatu Rarities release.

Some nice guys from Australia who are trying very hard to get aussie music out to the rest of the world. Cheese recently signed "A Religious Experience With Big Vern" whos debut EP, "All Boy Band" is out now and doing quite well. The next big thing from Cheese will be a new compilation of various bands from various parts of NSW. They have bands such as AREWBV, Bender, Clokwork, Bufo Marinus, Meaneither, Spelfish, Kilderkin, and yet more to come. This little gem should be out by the end of January so keep an ear out.

The third member of the PLUG coalition (along with Too Pure and Wiiija). 1993 saw them release two of the finest albums of the year in Breed's 'Violent Sentimental' and Gallon Drunk's 'From The Heart of Town'. The slicked back 50's smoke and grime of Gallon Drunk's back catalogue is further complimented by punk upstarts Mambo Taxi ('Dress Like That' being their finest 7" moment). And then there's the Clawfist Singles Club to subscribe to as well, specializing in split singles with one band covering the others songs. A great label.
Clawfist has temporarily hung up it's boots and closed it's doors, which is a real shame because the label released some great records. The singles club will continue for the present so it may still be worth getting in touch.

Cleopatra seems to have a real mixed bag of releases from early punk people like the Adicts, Angelic Upstarts, Anti Nowhere League and Christian Death, as well as stuff from goth definitives Alien Sex Fiend. Most of the stuff seems to be US releases of UK and European based sounds, there are Laibach and Kraftwerk releases. Not so sure there's very much in the way of original artists though. This label hardly seems to be pushing back any barriers with the stuff it's putting out. [email protected]

It's kind of debatable whether or not this is an indie label when you look at the roster, but they DO have some new stuff, so it's here. Label has an eclectic roster of former gold and platinum selling artists, including Yes, Deep Purple, Warrant, L.A. Guns, Motorhead, Slaughter, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron Maiden, and Justin Hayward (Moody Blues vocalist), along with Sexpod, a new group put out in conjunction with Slab Records.

Constellation Records, based in Montral, was officially born on May 30, 1997 with the simultaneous release of Sofa's New Era Building 7" and CD Grey. The label is owned and run by us (Ian Ilavsky and Don Wilkie). Our initial plan was to have the label grow out of a live music performance space that we first started planning in late 1995. After close to a year of searching for an appropriate space and coming up empty, we have put that project on hold and are concentrating full-time on the label (although we will soon start running monthly shows out of our loft in Old Montral).
In addition to the Sofa records, we recently released (August 14) an LP (vinyl-only) from godspeed you black emperor! called f# a# * [1995-1997]. Our musical tastes are diverse and we hope to reflect this as our catalogue grows. A unifying element we hope will always be present, however, is artists/material that push the boundaries. There are more than enough labels, both corporate and independent, releasing senseless, derivative, and/or just plain bad music and we have no desire to become part of the problem. Our geographical emphasis, at least in the short-term, will be Montral.
In addition to our current releases, we have several projects at various stages of development. Some time this fall we will release a 12" from Montral's Exhaust, a drum and bass and tape trio who serve-up their chaos and grooves live. Also, a split-7" from Montral's Sackville (who are about to release their second full-length on Mag Wheel Records) and New York City's Rex (a project that features drummer Doug Scharin of Codeine/June of 44/HIM) should be ready ready before the end of the year. Beyond that, we hope to start-up soon an off-shoot cassette label/distribution arm called Loafer that will carry cassette-only projects we think deserve to be heard outside of Montral as well as stuff recorded during the monthly gigs at our loft.
