Tiger Rattlesnake
A
medium sized rattlesnake, ranging in lengths of 20" to 36". Base
coloration is extremely variable, even within local populations. Color ranges
from blue, gray, ‘red‘, and pink. There is often an infusion of orange
coloration on the sides. The dorsal side of the Tiger Rattlesnake consists of
many irregular, gray or brownish crossbands or "tiger" bands which
form from small darker flecks or spots. The head is small comparative to body
size and the rattle is large comparative to body size.
Found
in the Sonoran basin desert and higher bajada deserts, up into oak grassland on
mountainsides. The Tiger rattlesnake seems to prefer the vicinity of washes and
drainages in or near mountains and foothills. Occasionally found out in the
flats near hills or mountains. This species seems to prefer warm and humid
conditions.
This
snake is found around the clock when conditions are favorable. Eats mice and
other small mammals.
This
snake is found in central, south-central, the extreme southeast corner of
Arizona to southern Sonora in Mexico.
This
species is known to have a highly potent venom, yet bites to humans are
infrequent.
