Speckled Rattlesnake

Crotalus mitchelli pyrrhus

A large rattlesnake ranging in size from 24" to 51". Exceptionally variable in color ranging from blue, gray, pink, brownish-orange, whitish-gray, and more. The color of snake usually matches the rocks on which it inhabits. Markings that consist of darker speckling often form crossbands or give an overall speckled appearance. Similar in appearance to that of the Tiger Rattlesnake. The tail has dark gray rings and takes on a somewhat ‘coon-tail‘ effect.

Found in rocky areas of Sonoran desert bajadas and mountains, and higher elevations ranging to juniper woodland.

Active around the clock when conditions are favorable. Eats mice, rats, lizards, and birds.

This snake is found across the western third of Arizona.
