Sidewinder Rattlesnake

Crotalus cerastes

 

A small rattlesnake, with lengths of 17" to 34", with 28 to 41 gray, brown, or tan blotches on a pale background that usually matches the soil and sand the snake lives on. A dark stripe extends back from the eye. Supraocular (eye) scales are heavily modified and horn like.

Snake is usually found in open areas of shrubby desert with sandy or loamy soil. Usually hides underground or coiled in the shade of bushes during the day.

Primarily diurnal during spring and primarily nocturnal during the hotter summer months. Eats lizards and mice.

This snake is found across western and southwestern Arizona
