The Cure formed in Crawley England in 1977.  Originally called Easy Cure, the band consisted of Robert Smith on rhythm guitar, Laurence 'Lol' Tolhurst on drums, Michael Dempsey on bass, Porl Thompson on lead guitar, and Peter O' Toole providing the vocals.  Peter O'Toole and Porl Thompson both left the band, and Robert was left with the double duty of playing guitar and singing.

The picture above is a very early photo of Lol, Michael, and Robert, probably from 1978 or 1979.  The boys seem to be sitting in front of a giant embryo?  Don't ask me!  I don't know what that's all about.
After the release of the single "Jumping Someone Else's Train," Micahel Dempsey left the band.  Simon Gallup, a friend of Robert's replaced Michael on bass and Matthieu Hartley, a friend of Simon's was brought into the group to play keyboards.  And so there were four.  From left to right, Simon Gallup, Matthieu Hartley, Lol Tolhurst and Robert Smith.
