-A WASHERWOMAN�S TALE-

Part 8
-The arrival of Gandalf  and My Promise to Bilbo-

Gandalf the Grey arrived with his cart full of fireworks in the late afternoon.  He met up with Frodo on the road to Hobbiton and now he was making his way to Bag End. I was washing Frodo�s dirty cloak that I had left to soak earlier that day and was alerted by a loud knock on the door. Bilbo who was busy writing his book called Frodo a couple of times, but he didn�t seem to hear his uncle call him to get the door.It seemed that Frodo had left Bag End to wander around in the woods as he often did. Fed up with certain relatives Bilbo mumbled to me:� I�ll get the door Lassie Rowan, by the way, where is that  cousin of mine?�.At the sound of the second hard knock on the door he said: �It must be the Sackville �Bagginses. They�re always after my belongings, I�m going to try and send them away �. I heard him open the front door open and heard Gandalf�s voice. Bilbo welcomed his old friend to Bag End and I felt that the old friends wanted to catch up on things and reminisce on old times and so I decided to leave them alone and continue with my washing. Frodo�s cloak was nice and clean now all the mud and stains were removed. It hung up nicely on the line outside to dry. As I was walking back to the house, I saw Frodo walking up the path with a rather pre-occupied look on his face. �What�s up with you, Frodo?� He seemed to be a little startled when he heard my voice. � Oh, Lassie Rowan, I lost my book  and I can�t find it anywhere�. He said with such a pitiful voice. I looked at him and answered:� Where were you the last time you held in your hands?� Frodo thought long and deep, for now he started to remember that he, in all his enthusiasm must  have dropped his book when he had heard Gandalf singing on his cart and whilst running to the road to meet him forgot all about it.
�It still must be lying  beneath the tree I was reading under�. Frodo then turned around and ran off the garden path and called out to me:� Tell Bilbo that I�ve gone back to  Hobbiton Woods to fetch my book�. He ran with such speed and energy that I for a moment thought that he might run into something.  Back at the kitchen in Bag End I overheard Bilbo talking very seriously  about his plans for the future to Gandalf. His wish to take a long holiday and finally finish the book he was writing. Frodo also had sensed that Bilbo was up to something reading his old maps. Mr. Baggins also told me one evening that he wanted to go out and travel again, but at the time I thought that he was just daydreaming of old times. Then Gandalf started to inform about me. � And how is Nevidiliel, is she still happy here and looking after Frodo?.� Bilbo called out to me as he saw me walking through the hall. �Lassie Rowan, oh no, I must say Nevdiliel can you come here, Gandalf wants to speak to you.� As he said that, Bilbo looked around him to see if Frodo was in. �Don�t worry Bilbo, Frodo is out to fetch his book he left under the tree, he isn�t be able to hear us.� After he heard these words Bilbo sighed of relief. �I want to inform you that I�ve made plans to leave the Shire and go on and live with lord Elrond and the Elves at Rivendell. As you know I�ve wanted to do it for a long time and that time is near. I�m leaving everything to Frodo as he�s my only heir.� I looked surprised:� You are really leaving, and what does Frodo think of all this?� I asked. �Well he doesn�t know it yet and I don�t intend to tell him, because he belongs here. Bag End and the Shire is his home. With your help he�ll manage and live a happy life.� I answered:� I�m sure that Frodo will manage to be the master of Bag End. Bilbo answered: � Lassie Rowan, I want you to make the same promise Gandalf just did to watch over Frodo, he�s young and doesn�t always see the danger around him�.  I smiled and said: �Bilbo, in the all these years I�ve lived in at Bag End, Frodo and I grew very close to each other, I�ll do everything I can to keep him safe. I promised that to Elrond, Gandalf and now to you.� We suddenly heard the door open and then saw Frodo walk into the parlour waving with the book in his hand. �So you found your book after all, Frodo, was it still under the tree?� I asked cheerfully. �It was indeed and I�m happy to have it back too, because it�s a really good and interesting book.� He answered while he seated himself down on the chair closest to Bilbo. �What book are you exactly reading Frodo?� 
I asked trying to read the back cover of his book. Frodo turned the book over and showed me the front cover and in bold gold imprint letters stood: �Everything you wanted to know about the Elves of Middle-Earth�. The title surprised me somewhat, but I didn�t want to let anyone know how surprised I was. I grinned at Frodo and asked: � And did you learn anything about the Elves in your book ?� Frodo answered: � Sure, I�ve learned that Elves lead their lives close to nature and they also have better hearing than us Hobbits do and most important they have an immortal life, that�s really something, don�t you think, Lassie Rowan?� �Yes Frodo, being immortal might seem nice, but it isn�t always ideal.� After saying this, Gandalf gave me a certain look while he was holding up a jug of wine and said:� Anyone want another drink?,� Bilbo you have such good taste in wine.� Because the jug was nearly empty, I volunteered  to go into the well stocked wine cellar to refill the winejug. Frodo came after me and asked: �Lassie, you seem to know more about the immortal life of an Elf, why isn�t it always ideal?� Realizing that I might have spoken to much, I tried to answer my prot�g� in a neutral way:
 � Well, Frodo, it�s not always a pleasant idea that you have the knowledge that if you have Hobbit, or human friends you�ll lose them after a number years  by old age or whatever faith brings, that�s what I meant.�  �That�s a sad thing indeed, Lassie Rowan, I didn�t think of it that way �. Frodo said. �And before, I forget to tell you, I�m going to meet up with Pippin, Sam and Merry later on to help the others on the party-field after dinner, there are still a couple of things that still have to be done down there.�
�Sure, but don�t make it too late, because the party is tomorrow evening and you still have time to do the finishing touches in the morning�. I said. �All right, Lassie Rowan, I�ll be back in a little while.� Frodo told me. But as you know how Hobbits are always in for a bit of fun after all the hard work was done, the foursome went to the Green Dragon Inn to drink a pint or two. As Bilbo and Gandalf decided to turn in early, I decided to wait up for Frodo as I could not lock  the door from the inside, because Frodo could not get in as the night lock was on the inside. While I was waiting I saw Frodo�s book lying on the sitting-room table. I took it and looked through it. Then I began to read it with great interest and it made me feel a bit weepy, because I felt a little homesick. I missed my home in Valinor. It was only just now that I realized that I began to miss it. I completely lost track of the time, when I heard Frodo�s voice outside the front door. I quickly dried my tears and put the book back on the table. Frodo apologized for being so late. �Sorry Lassie, there was still so much to be done and when the work was all finished, the four of us  went for a drink and a little snack.� Then he looked at me and saw my red and teary eyes and asked me: � Lassie, are you all right, I didn�t want to upset you by coming in so late?� �No Frodo, don�t you worry about me.� I tried to re-assure him. Frodo wasn�t convinced and sat himself next to me. �Lassie,� he said, �I know you just as well as you know me, we�ve always been able to talk  to each other about things. Please tell me what�s the matter, I want to help you.� I knew that Frodo wouldn�t give up and take no for an answer, so I told him: �Frodo, I�ve been reading your book and some of it was so beautifully written that it touched me�. Frodo looked a bit surprised at me: � Did it really, I didn�t realize that a book like this would make someone cry unless the reader was an Elf living far away from home. � At that point I was stricken for words and wondered if he secretly knew something or was this just an innocent remark. It was not the time to give my identity away, and I told Frodo that it was getting late and it was going to be a very busy day tomorrow.

Frodo was concerned after he found Lassie Rowan in tears.

Part 9
- A Party to Remember-

The day of the party turned out to be a very busy day. Everyone who had promised to help us cook and bake arrived at Bag End at a very early hour and were soon walking in each other�s way. The kitchen was way too small and overcrowded, for about ten of Bilbo�s nieces had decided to show up. It didn�t take very long before they were bickering and shouting so loud at each other, that Bilbo had thought it wise of him to intervene to get his much cherished piece and quiet back in the Hobbit hole. �Ladies, ladies please�, he shouted at them. �I want some piece and quiet around here. At least eight of you must take your business elsewhere. The remaining two can carry on. Mr. Baggins� nieces looked at each other. Who was to leave and who was to stay?  Bilbo decided that the makers of the cakes that were already in the oven could stay. After he had showed the door to the eight leaving and moping relatives, the peace returned and everyone was satisfied, well nearly everyone. Our cook was relieved, but now the kitchen was in such a state. Pots and pans were scattered all over and the kitchen table was partly covered in flower. The cook ordered the two remaining Hobbits to tidy the mess up before they could continue with their work. 
A little later in the day Frodo left Bag End with his bongo-drums under his arm to see if his mates were at the party-field rehearsing on stage, as they volunteered to perform that evening.
Frodo felt hurt because I couldn�t share my feelings with him, so he tried to avoid me that morning. But before he left, I saw him standing at the front door and our eyes met briefly.
As I had not yet had a chance to congratulate him with his birthday, I walked up to him, but Frodo shook his head and went out the door. Mr. Baggins who had witnessed this looked worried at me and said: � What is going on here, Lassie Rowan, Have I missed something?�
I nodded and answered: � Oh Bilbo, I�well, Frodo and I had a little misunderstanding about the book he was reading. Now he�s left to go to his friends who are already at the party-field. Gandalf who was standing close behind us and heard this asked: �You both had an argument about the book and what did you tell him?�
�Gandalf, I told Frodo that I enjoyed his book, then I started to cry and that�s when it all started.� The wizard picked the book up from the table and read the contents on the index page. He shook his grey head and said to me:� This book is not one that you should have been reading Nevidiliel. This book is interesting for Frodo as he�s keen on learning and doesn�t know the Elvish way of life. But for you it�s different. I know that you miss Valinor, but you mustn�t forget why you are here. Frodo needs your support very soon and you must therefore find him and make up with him. It doesn�t matter how you do it, but do it quick.� Gandalf helped me in my cloak and opened the door for me and off to the party-field I went. I was keen to talk to Frodo and give him an explanation, but I also knew that he could be as stubborn as a mule. He was on the stage as I had expected with Pippin, Merry and a few other friends. I took a deep breath and walked up to the stage and called: � Frodo, will you come here for a moment I want to have a quick word with you.� He stood up with a deep sigh and walked towards me and said:� What is it, Lassie, I�m very busy� I answered softly to him: � I know you are Frodo, but I owe you an explanation and an apology about my reaction last night.� Frodo looked at me and was waiting for me to say something. �Well, there are certain things I can�t talk about with anyone and even to a good friend. I�m truly sorry that I overreacted and left you in an awkward and confusing position.� It was clear that Frodo was still confused:� But Lassie, it was only just a book. I wanted to comfort you as you were so upset� �I know Frodo, and I�m very happy to have found a concerned and loving friend as you are master Baggins. By the way, our date for the dance this evening is still on isn�t it?�
�Sure Lassie Rowan, but only if you don�t decide to leave me standing there alone on the dance floor at the last minute.� I promised to be there and then he said in a happy voice:
� Well, in that case Lassie, our date is still on.� After a short but loving hug I said to Frodo as I waved him goodbye: � Now, go on back to your friends, you mustn�t keep them waiting.�
After I arrived back at Bag End, I found Gandalf sitting at the sitting-room table smoking his pipe. �Well, �Nevidiliel, have you and young master Baggins sorted out your differences?�
�Yes, Gandalf, Frodo and I had a good chat just now and we�re on speaking terms again. That�s not all; we�re still both going to the dance together this evening. The wizard nodded and said: � That�s very good news, because young master Frodo is going to need your help and support very soon.� And while he said that he gazed at Bilbo who was packing some things from his study. I too looked in his direction. �He�s doing it tonight, isn�t he Gandalf ?
And again Gandalf nodded. �Yes, but you mustn�t tell Frodo because it�s going to ruin his birthday.� �Very well, I will not mention anything to him, but it will break Frodo�s heart I�m certain of it �. Then Bilbo entered the room with his back-pack. �Lassie Rowan, has Gandalf told you the news?� �It�s the right time and place besides it�s easier for all of us when I leave tonight before Frodo arrives back to Bag End.� After saying this Bilbo handed me a few envelopes containing a few important documents. �Give those to my lad, for he�s the new master of Bag End from now on. I trust upon you that he gets them after I�ve left � he added.
�Yes, Bilbo I�ll hand the documents over tonight�. I reassured him. Then he smiled and said: �You�re a good lass, I always knew that you had a good heart� while he put the backpack out of sight. I put the large envelopes and other documents in the dresser drawer and took a peek in the kitchen. The scents from there smelled heavenly. Bilbo�s nieces were certainly good cooks in the best Hobbit tradition and needed no assistance, so I decided to leave the two women alone. As there were no clothes to wash, I decided to take a look at my wardrobe to find something suitable to wear for the party. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I was so taken with the idea to look for a decent outfit for Frodo, that I completely forgot to find something suitable for myself! �Nice one, Neffy� I mumbled to myself �It�s too late to get yourself something new to wear now �. I finally managed to make a combination that I was satisfied with: a chequered dress with a brown apron and wrap. Maybe not festive, but it looked fine for a party in Hobbiton. After I finished dressing up and came out of my room, Bilbo�s nieces were packing the food that they had prepared loading the boxes on to the cart that was waiting outside. They had everything well organized. In the meantime the band was finished rehearsing and Frodo hastily returned to Bag End to change his clothes and get freshened up. Little did he know what was going to happen that same evening. It was going to be a great party and a family reunion at the same time. Bilbo wanted so badly to try to avoid the Sackville-Bagginses, but he saw them arriving an walking up to him. He couldn�t run and hide now they�ve already seen him. Bilbo smiled as the two came closer�. �Welcome, welcome, Lobelia and Otho, drink some, eat some, and dance some, make yourself at home� he said, but between his teeth he mumbled: � But don�t make it too comfortable� Lobelia heard him mumble something and said :�What did you say?� Bilbo stammered: �Oh, I said go find a comfortable table� then he hastily excused himself and walked swiftly to his other arriving guests.
After a while I spotted Frodo and Sam as they both just arrived and they were looking very smart. I walked over to them and then we went off to sit at a table. Pippin and Merry arrived shortly after, with their musical instruments and waved at Frodo as a sign to get ready for the performance. �I have to go to the stage now Sam, can you stay here and keep Lassie company while I�m gone?� Sam answered �Yes, master Frodo I will.� I saw Sam looking anxiously around him. �It�s Rosie you�re looking out for, isn�t it Sam?� �Yes, Lassie Rowan, but I can�t find her�, he answered. I looked around the field that was full of guests, and then I spotted Rosie Cotton dancing and laughing with a few of her admirers. �There she is Sam�, I told him, she seems to be having a good time�. Sam looked in Rosie�s direction and sighed: �She has no eye for me at the moment, nor will she ever notice me now�. I felt sorry for Sam and his lack of confidence. �Samwise Gamgee, if you want to get noticed you must go and walk over to her� I said. �Oh no, Lassie, I dare not do such a thing�. He answered with a desperate voice and Sam took a sip of his mug of ale. In the meantime I enjoyed the music and the company of good friends. During the intermission of the band Frodo managed to find his way back to our table. He saw Sam still gazing sadly in Rosie Cotton�s direction. �He�s been sitting like that since you were on stage�, �There must be something we can do for poor
Sam ? �I asked Frodo. �Yes, Lassie wait and see�, he answered. Samwise stood up and walked to the ale stand, while Frodo walked after him. They seemed to be discussing something and Sam shook his head a few times and as he wanted to walk away I saw that Frodo has pushed his friend practically in to Rosie�s arms when she was dancing to accordion music near them. It was such an amusing sight, that Frodo laughed quite loud and he was still laughing when he arrived back at the table. �I just had to push him in the right direction, that�s all�. �Frodo, I couldn�t have done it any better, by the way don�t you have to go back on stage, because Merry and Pippin are already up there?� He answered: �Don�t you worry Lassie Rowan, I�ve done my bit of drumming, besides I thought that we were on a date and all this time I haven�t even shared one dance with you�. Frodo then stood up and gallantly gave me his arm and said: �Shall we?� � I would be honoured, master Baggins� I said and walked with him to the dance floor. It was needless to say that all eyes were upon us. Clear as it was to see that certain relatives of Bilbo�s cast a nasty look at us. Especially the Sackville- Bagginses, who detested Frodo very much, because Bag End was now far beyond their reack. Even a few Hobbiton lasses, were acting very snobbish and had the pleasure of making comments on us. Whispering away at each other laughing and gossiping. �Why is a well to do Frodo Baggins going out with his uncle Bilbo�s washerwoman? �I started feeling somewhat insecure, but I had to admit it must have been a strange sight to see Frodo and myself dancing together as I was much taller than him and all the other Hobbits that were dancing on the dance floor. Maybe they were right: � What is a washerwoman doing with a young well to do Hobbit?� But they didn�t know anything else about me, so I decided to lay the gossip behind me. After the music stopped Frodo and I went to watch the fireworks. It was a magical sight, but knowing where it came from and who the maker was, I didn�t expect it otherwise. Then I saw Bilbo desperately trying to attract his cousin�s attention. �Frodo, I think your uncle wants you to go over to him.� As Frodo walked over to his uncle I could just see them both running in to a nearby tent. Then I heard Lobelia calling out for Bilbo, but he didn�t come out of the tent and neither did Frodo. After a few minutes Frodo walked back towards me with a smile on his face. �What happened back there, Frodo and why are you smiling?� �Oh Lassie, uncle Bilbo told me something and I don�t know why he brought it up. He said to me that I was a good lad and that he didn�t take me in out of charity and also that I would manage�. I knew exactly what Bilbo was trying to say, but he hadn�t had the courage to say goodbye to Frodo face to face, he hadn�t the heart to do so. �And Frodo, what did you answer him�. Well, I found his words quite odd and thought that he must have drank too much of The Gaffer�s old brew � We were taken by surprise by a loud bang and were just able to see one of the tents fly up high in the sky. Then came the highlight of the fireworks the dragon and it was so realistically ferocious and enormous that everyone at the party-field had to duck down to the ground, as it swooped very low and went up in the air again, the dragon exploded and lit the evening sky with colourful lights. The party came to an end and Bilbo walked up to the stage to hold a little �thank you for coming� speech.

No one at the party was aware what was going to happen, and even I found Bilbo�s speech very strange, as if he was about to say something important but just couldn�t find the right words. Bilbo disappeared and left his guests behind in the middle of confusion. Frodo was speechless himself and kept looking at the empty stage. Frodo and the guests thought that
this was a new illusion that Bilbo and Gandalf had prepared for the party�s grand finale, but it wasn�t  meant to be like that. Meanwhile Gandalf had also left the party field unnoticed. The guests were leaving for home too and thanked Frodo for the hospitality and the good time they had that evening. After a while, Frodo was trying to find his uncle, but he was of couse no where in sight. I witnessed this and saw his restless looking eyes. �Poor Frodo� I thought,  �He has no idea whatsoever and I wonder how he�s going to cope when we are back at Bag End later this evening. I barely dare not think of what was to happen next. So deep in my thoughts, I didn�t notice that Frodo came walking up to me and started drying off the many pieces of crockery I had already washed. �I hope that I didn�t startle you Lassie, but I couldn�t leave you alone to do all this washing up on your own�, �Thanks very much for your help Frodo, it�s much appreciated�. I told him. �What a fine party it was this evening� He looked at me and answered: � I wonder how Gandalf and Bilbo managed to arrange that disappearing act, that was so impressive, I bet that we�ll be hearing of this for years yet to come.� �Yes, Frodo, that was a very impressive thing your uncle Bilbo did, � I answered in a soft voice. When the washing up was done we walked back to Bag End after an evening full of surprises.
But the biggest surprise for Frodo was yet to come�..

Part 10
-Frodo becomes the master of Bag End-

When Frodo and I arrived at Bag End I knew that I had to finish some unfinished business and I wasn�t really looking forward to doing it. After we hung up our cloaks, I asked Frodo to go into the sitting room, because I had something to discuss with him. �Frodo I have something for you, it�s from your uncle Bilbo�, I said and then I handed him the envelope and other papers.
�What are these Lassie, I don�t understand?� �Where is Bilbo anyway?� Frodo asked suspiciously. Then Gandalf walked in to the room and said :�Frodo, your uncle has gone to live with the Elves in Rivendell , he needed a change of scenery and he also wanted to finish writing his memoirs. Frodo opened the envelope and read the documents and in astonishment he said :�He�s left me all his Middle-Earthly possessions and these are the papers of ownership to Bag End�. The poor young Hobbit was too confused to say anything more. And after what seemed like an eternity Frodo finally said in a said soft voice: � You knew about this Lassie, why didn�t you tell me that uncle Bilbo was planning to leave the Shire tonight?� �Dear Frodo, it was your uncle�s wish not to tell you. He didn�t want to ruin your birthday and he knows that you are happy here in the Shire�. I said and felt sad too. Frodo looked at us in a slight panic as he then felt insecure and said:. �I don�t know how to run Bag End�. �Sure you can and with Lassie Rowan�s and my help, you�ll become a worthy master of Bag End as your uncle Bilbo once was.� Gandalf reassured Frodo. He felt relieved that he was in such good company of friends that where willing to support him. �Thanks very much for your support the both of you� Frodo said and added: �By the way, I found this on the ground in the hall near the door�. And stuck out his hand and in it was a ring of gold� Gandalf nodded and explained: �It�s your uncle Bilbo�s old ring and now it belongs to you . Keep it safe and don�t lose it�. Frodo put the ring in an envelope that Gandalf quickly sealed and hastily put away in the dresser drawer with the other documents. Then we went off to bed. That night I knew that Frodo wasn�t going to get much sleep and it wasn�t long after I blew the candle out I heard Frodo coming out of his room and making his way to the kitchen. He had to take the whole situation in and accept the fact that his life wasn�t going to be the same from this day on. After a little while I decided to go to him and as I went to the couch I found him in tears. �Frodo?� I asked. He looked at me but was unable to speak. �Don�t cry Frodo, I know how you are feeling, but you mustn�t forget that your uncle Bilbo loves you very much, but he wanted to travel again and visit his friends while his health still allows him to do so. He�s an old Hobbit Frodo and he left you everything that was and is important to him. Now it�s your turn to be the master of Bag End�.
�But I never had the chance to say goodbye Lassie and wish him well�, Frodo managed to say between sniffing. �Frodo, it was is wish to do it this way, he hates saying goodbye, but he left you behind with me and Gandalf is also keeping his eyes on you, as often as he can. Don�t worry it will all work out fine�. I said, while I offered Frodo a cool glass of water.
�Now, I�m going back to bed, as it�s going to be an early start in the morning�. I said softly and added, � Don�t stay up too late all right?� Frodo nodded and said, � I�ll go back to my room soon, just want to think a few things over before I hop back into bed, thanks for your company Lassie Rowan that was very much appreciated, sleep well �. �You too master Baggins,� I said before I opened my bedroom door. �This is only the beginning and it hasn�t even started yet� I sighed when I stepped into bed and felt quite sorry for Frodo.

Part 11
-Feeling Lost and Uncertain-

The next morning I found Frodo fast asleep at the kitchen table and I decided to wake the poor soul up. I tapped him on the shoulder and called his name a few times. �Frodo, Frodo Baggins, wake up,  it�s almost 8 o�clock and time for breakfast.�  Frodo opened his eyes slowly and looked at me. �You didn�t go to bed at all last night haven�t you?� I asked him. He shook his head and replied: �No Lassie, I must have dozed off and I�m starting to get a sore neck.� �You silly Hobbit, let me give you a neck-rub,� I answered and put my hands on Frodo�s sore neck.  �Lassie, I had a strange dream, last night and dreamt that uncle Bilbo left Bag End and was not to come back�. He said that in such a sad voice and continued :�It�s not a dream is it, he�s really gone away for good?� I could only confirm his question. �Yes Frodo,
your uncle left quietly last night after the party, you weren�t dreaming.� �How is your neck feeling now?� I added. �It�s feeling much better know Lassie, thank you.� Then I heard our cook coming through the front door. �Good morning all, what a party that was last night master Baggins.� �Yes, yes, that sure was something,� answered Frodo. �But that�s what my uncle is good at, surprises�. �By the way, where�s your uncle, isn�t he up yet, it must have been very late last night?� Frodo went quiet, so I said: � Master Bilbo has decided to go on a long journey, so he�s going to be a way for a long time, a very long time to catch up with some friends. It�s only Frodo and  I living here now in Bag End.� Frodo stood up and walked silently away from the kitchen to the front door. �Frodo, where are you going?� I asked �You haven�t yet eaten any breakfast.� �I�m not very hungry Lassie,  I�ll won�t be long,� he said and went outside. He wasn�t taking his uncle�s departure very lightly, was feeling terribly afraid and uncertain. Frodo decided to take a walk through the forest as he sometimes did to think in peace. He walked thru Bagshot Row and left the path in the direction of the Hobbiton Woods. Frodo was on his way to his favourite tree, where he often sat to read and enjoy the beautiful landscape around him. When he arrived there Frodo took off his cloak and laid it on the ground which was wet of dew to sit on. He just sat there staring in front of him and let his tears flow freely. In the meantime I was getting rather worried about Frodo�s absence. Staying a way that long wasn�t  his normal routine. I took my cloak from the peg and just as I wanted to leave Bag End to find Frodo, Sam was on his way up the stairs with a few gardening tools in his hand. �Morning, master Samwise, I�m going to look for Frodo, he went off a while ago without breakfast, he said that he wouldn�t be long, but he�s been away for quite a while now.� Sam put away the tools and left Bag End with me. �Do you have any idea where he could be?� I asked �Because it�s going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack.� �I�m not sure where he can be Lassie, but I�m certain that he�s not on the party field, as I just passed there before coming here.� I thought deeply and could suddenly remember that Frodo also went to the forest to read.� �Sam, I think I know where he is, he could be under the tree, why didn�t I think of that before?� Sam and I walked hastily to the Hobbiton Woods and not long after we found Frodo still sitting there on his cloak on the wet grass. �Frodo, are you all right?� Sam and I called out in choir. �We were getting worried about you, come lets go home and get you nice and warm again.� Sam helped him stand up and I took Frodo�s  wet cloak from the ground. �I�m so sorry, to be the cause of  your worry, I didn�t mean to.� He said.
�It�s all right Frodo, we found you safe and sound and we understand that you needed some time alone to think, but when you said you wouldn�t be long and you didn�t come back for your first and second breakfast , we started thinking that something had happened to you�.    
The three of us walked back to Bag End where Gandalf was walking to the path to greet us.
� So you�ve found the lost puppy, come in quickly and the cook will get you three some hot milk and honey.� �Frodo is fine, he was just coming to terms about his uncle�s departure and forgot the time�, I reassured the worried wizard. In the meantime Frodo had a quick wash and put on some clean clothes and came back to have his late second (or first) breakfast , the time considering. In the middle of Frodo�s breakfast he suddenly said: �I�ve had some time to think things over this morning and even though I haven�t a clue what the future has in store for us, I�m very grateful that I have supportive friends who want to help me with the upkeep of Bag End. It was at first a scary thought for me to have to be responsible for everything. Uncle Bilbo made it look so easy, but I�ll do my best so uncle Bilbo can be proud of me.� Gandalf looked very pleased and said :� Frodo, your uncle has faith in you and that�s why he left all his belongings in your care. He�s already proud of you, so you needn�t worry about that.�  I stood up and gave Frodo a hug and said: �We�ll all be here for you master Baggins, you just have to ask.� Frodo was touched and whispered :�Thanks Lassie Rowan, no, thank you all for being here with me.�

Part 12
-Getting There, But Things Are About To Change-

The days of uncertainty of Frodo�s new found life as master of Bag End were almost over, as we were there to show him the ropes to good house and home keeping. He was keen to learn and he was also able to turn to The Gaffer for help and advice on certain issues, gardening in particular. 
When things didn�t go as expected, Frodo still found his way to his favourite tree in the Hobbiton Woods to have a read and to smoke his pipe or just sit down and think things over. Frodo adjusted to his new life as master of Bag End, but he also missed his uncle Bilbo, the stories he told and the fun they had together.
�I wonder if Bilbo�s all right and if his book writing is coming along.� Frodo wondered and asked me one evening.  �Frodo, your uncle is in Rivendell and he is enjoying himself, noting down his memoirs and staying with his friends, you don�t have to worry about you uncle Bilbo.� �I know Lassie Rowan, I know and I bet he�s more worried about me, than I have to be worried about him.� �Frodo, your uncle believes in you and in your way of handling things here. Don�t forget you�re a Baggins and the Bagginses  are strong minded Hobbits.� I re-assured him. 
One evening we suddenly heard a hard pounding on the front door which sounded quite alarming. Frodo hastily opened the door and was very surprised to see who it was.
�Gandalf, come in quickly, what is it, you look so worried?� he said. The wizard walked with big steps into the Hobbit hole and without greeting us he asked desperately:� Frodo, do you still have your uncle Bilbo�s ring?� The young Hobbit nodded walked to the dresser and opened the top drawer where the sealed envelope lay. He took it out and handed it over to Gandalf. He then cast it into the fire. Frodo and I looked surprised at each other. What was our visitor up to? �Gandalf, what are you doing?� asked.  The worried wizard said nothing for a while and kept staring at the ring that lay in the hearth.
Then he said:� I hope that this ring isn�t the one I suspect that it is to be� �What do you mean Gandalf I don�t understand, what does it not supposed to be?� asked Frodo anxiously. Gandalf took the ring out of the fire and let Frodo examine it. In the meantime I just watched them, then it suddenly occurred to me that the Valor�s foresight was going to become a reality. The Valor couldn�t place Frodo at first, what could a Hobbit do to save Middle-Earth? I walked into the kitchen to make a cup of tea and felt  very sad. �The time will come,� I remembered the Valor had said to me. �This young and innocent Hobbit will have to leave his home to carry an enormous burden to destruction. This will not be without danger.� Then I came back to my senses when I saw Frodo walking frantically to and fro and almost yelling at Gandalf in despair: �Take it, take it please!� I heard Gandalf refuse Frodo�s offer to take the ring from him. After this Frodo ran to the cupboard and took his rucksack out and started packing in a total state of panic. I went over to him and said: �Frodo, what are you doing and where are you off to?� He answered nervously: �I�m  heading off to Bree and meet up with Gandalf in a few days time after he returns from a friend who can advise him about what to do about the ring, it can�t stay here.� We were both shaken after hearing an enormous stumble in the kitchen. It was Sam, who was pulled in the kitchen by Gandalf from the window. After listening to their conversation, it became clear that Samwise was going to accompany his friend on his journey.
�Lassie Rowan, we�d like you to come with us�. Frodo asked. �No Frodo, I can�t come with you, but Sam is going with you to keep you company and someone has to look after Bag End while you�re away � I answered.  Then Gandalf told Samwise and Frodo to make haste, as it was too dangerous to stay in The Shire. We had to make our goodbyes short, but Frodo and I managed to hug each other and I told him to watch out. He looked back at me after he left through the front door and he looked very sad. Gandalf put his hand on Frodo�s shoulder and pushed him forward tenderly. I stayed behind in an empty Bag End, feeling  upset, not only for myself, but also for poor Frodo, who now had an enormous burden to carry and he wasn�t even aware how large it was. After a while Gandalf returned and said that the two friends were on their way. �This is Frodo Baggin�s destiny, he was chosen to do this Nevdiliel, you knew that one day the time was going to come for Frodo to undertake this journey and the time has come, you�ve done what you were appointed to do.� �Yes Gandalf, I know, but I�m so afraid, there are so many dangers out there that Frodo and Samwise aren�t aware of..� I said softly.
�Nevdiliel, Frodo is stronger and wiser than you give him credit for, you thought him how to be strong and it�s time to let him go. After this journey has been fulfilled he�ll be back, don�t worry and you both can carry on with your lives. �Gandalf tried to comfort me and petted me on my shoulder.
�I want to visit my family in Rivendell as there�s nothing keeping me here in Bag End for the time being. Maybe there�s some news from Eldamar.� I suggested. �Yes Nevdiliel, you go and visit Imladris, that will keep you mind off things here for a while�. Gandalf said and decided it was high time to leave for Ortanc, where his friend Saruman lived.
I packed my bags the following day and was able to take the pony-cart in the afternoon, aware of the dangers that could cross my way leaving The Shire. I felt the threatening atmosphere around me on the road, but I couldn�t sense what it was, but it was there and everywhere looking at me. 
It had been raining for most of the day and the road to Bree became to muddy for the pony-cart to ride. We had to make a diversion and stay the night at Foremost. At the inn we heard that nine black riders were out riding and desperately in search of something and someone who seemed to have what they have been looking for.
One of the guests who claimed to have seen them said that the person who the riders were looking for was called Baggins. It was then as if the whole of Middle-Earth shook from under me. Frodo  and Samwise were out there totally unaware of the danger that was following them. I hoped that they found somewhere safe to spend the night out of the rain and out of sight from the riders.
That night I could not get much sleep, and the next morning the trip to Bree was bumpy  
Because of the muddy ditches in the ground. When we finally arrived in the village of Bree in the early afternoon it looked as if a tornado had taken the place by surprise. Some buildings were damaged and the gate of the village was off its hinges. After asking around we heard that the nine dark riders had arrived during the night and caused this devastation. The inn �The Prancing Pony� was the building that had suffered most of the damage. Then I remembered that Frodo and Sam where supposed to meet up with Gandalf there. The inn-keeper Mr. Butterburr was just able to tell me that four Hobbits, one of them named Mr. Underhill had left the inn with a ranger early that morning.  This news came as a relief to me, because I knew that Frodo and Samwise were all right, but who were the other two Hobbits and who was the ranger they were with? And Gandalf, where was he?
Mr. Butterburr couldn�t give me the answers to those questions, as his memory was letting him down again.  
After the ponies were properly fed and rested, we were on our way again. The road to the Ford near Rivendell was a long, but more comfortable ride and after a few hours I had to walk the last mile to the last homely house in the East as there were no suitable roads for a pony cart to ride through. As I was on my own now, I had to keep my ears and eyes open for the possible dangers around me, because you never know what�s lurking behind the trees. Fortunately there wasn�t another sole in sight. The road to Imladris was quiet and sereen, the landscape picturesque as ever. My thoughts were with Frodo and Sam and I wondered what they both were doing. The idea that they were now travelling with two other Hobbits and a ranger made me less worried, but as it was their first time out of The Shire and far from home I couldn�t help feeling a bit anxious anyway. After half an hour I finally arrived at my destination: high above in the trees the family home of Lord Elrond

Part 13
-At Rivendell-

I arrived  in Rivendell and it was nice to be among the Elves again and Gandalf thought it was best for me to come back to the house of my origin. My family and I had left Middle-Earth a long time ago and I never had thought that I would ever return to Rivendell, it was a real warm homecoming. I caught up with Bilbo, who was still busy writing his memoirs and was enjoying his retirement. Little did we know that we were in for a very unpleasant surprise, because later that day Arwen had returned to Rivendell on her horse Asfaloth with a bundle in her arms. She seemed very concerned and upset, and riding as if she was being chased by something evil. Because I could only see her from a distance, I couldn�t really make out what the green �blue bundle what she carried with her exactly was, but it was too heavy for her to carry. Arwen�s hasty return caused quite a stir and even her father Elrond was called for from his quarters, for urgent assistance was needed. It soon became clear that Arwen had brought back a seriously wounded Hobbit. Then it struck me, that Frodo had a green-blue cloak the same colour Arwen�s bundle had. I was now determined to find out if my suspicions were correct, so I went to the guestroom where the unfortunate Hobbit was put to rest in the large Elven bed. I stood there in the corner of the room and to my horror it was indeed Frodo lying there in the bed, so lifeless, limp and pale. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder, it was Gandalf and I started to cry. He led me away from the room and brought me in to the hall where I seated myself down on one of the stools. �What�s going to happen to Frodo now, Gandalf.?� 
�I don�t know Nevdiliel, as I can make out Arwen�s concerned words master Baggins was stabbed by the Witch King with a Morgul blade and that means that the poison leaves a wound that will never fully heal.� �I�m grateful that Aragorn who travelled with the Hobbits had remembered about the medicinal powers of the herb Athelas and that slowed the lethal poison down which had saved Frodo�s life so far. Master Baggins is in good hands now. My friend and your uncle Elrond knows exactly which Elvish medicine Frodo needs.� 
�Gandalf, I�d like to help nurse Frodo back to health if I may, it seems that Frodo can�t see very well and he is in quite a lot of pain.� �Nevdiliel, I�ll have to take the matter up with Elrond first, but if you do get permission to do so, you cannot wear the Elven robes you are wearing now when you�re with Frodo. Even though he can�t see very well, he mustn�t see you dressed in your Elven clothes and musn�t find out about your connections with Rivendell. Nevdiliel, I can�t promise you anything. The decision is up to your uncle.� I understood Gandalf�s words and walked back to my quarters, impatiently waiting for lord Elrond�s final decision.
After a brief while Gandalf and Elrond stood at my door and I let them in. �Nevdiliel, we both took your humble request in serious consideration and you must also be aware that Frodo must never be able to place a link to you and Rivendell. You must tell him that you were passing through and are only staying here for a few days.� Elrond said while he walked around me. �You also must be dressed appropriately. And as the Elvish healing rites and ceremonies aren�t introduced to you, I think it not wise that you assist me when I�m practising this. But I�ll grant you my full permission to help Frodo feel more comfortable and give him solace, as he needs it from a dear friend. I�m letting Samwise assist you, as Frodo trusts you both.  I thanked both Elrond and Gandalf gratefully and after letting them out of my quarters, I went and made myself ready and took one of my Hobbiton dresses out of my wardrobe chest and put it on, and then I brushed my curly brown hair and fastened it with a clip as I was used to wearing it at Bag End.  At the entrance of Frodo�s bedroom Elrond handed a small silver tray with a glass of medicinal tea for Frodo to me with the words:� Make sure that he drinks all of it�. Then I went into the room. I walked to his bedside, where he lay asleep, and feverish. I had to wake him up very gently, when he opened his eyes; I could see the strange blue colour. It wasn�t a pleasant sight and quite shocking actually. Frodo groaned as he tried to look at me through the mist and blurriness in his vision. He didn�t seem to recognize me. �Drink this Frodo, it will make you�ll feel better.� I tried to comfort him, while I had to lift his head up for him to be able to drink. And as medicine can taste quite foul, the tea did as well, and Frodo rejected the medicinal potion at first. Elrond who stood next to me and took the glass over from me. He said something in Elvish, which Frodo seemed to understand and he drank the tea until the glass was empty and then sank into a deep sleep again. The peace and quiet in the room was disturbed by the entering of Samwise Gamgee and his friends Merry, Pippin and Aragorn who had just arrived from their long and dangerous journey from Weathertop.  
�Lassie Rowan, what are you doing here?� asked Sam, Pippin and Merry in choir and surprised to see me. �I was travelling to my family in Archet, but the road was too dangerous so I ended up here.� Samwise, who managed to take Frodo�s hand, was very worried about his friend. �Frodo�s going to be all right isn�t he, Lassie?� he asked.
 �I don�t know Sam, he�s in such a bad way, but Lord Elrond is doing the best he can and it�s also up to Frodo if he�s willing to win the battle. Lord Elrond was friendly, but stern: � You mustn�t forget that this room is a room meant for healing the ill and that means that it�s necessary that the patient gets the peace and quiet, so you three Hobbits must go with Arwen who will show you to your rooms and get ready for supper.� Aragorn stayed behind and I was formally introduced to him. �I want to thank you for helping Frodo, you saved his life.� I said thankfully. Then Frodo woke up again in fear, pain and confusion. He was shivering and feeling extremely cold.  Elrond put his hand on Frodo�s forehead and started to meditate and after what seemed a long while, Frodo calmed down.� I must find a piece of the remaining blade which was left in his shoulder.� Elrond said. �We must be quick, Nevdiliel, you must get boiling water and more young Athelas leaves and make a strong tea of it. It will hopefully sedate Frodo, so he won�t suffer anymore-unnecessary pain. Aragorn, help me keep Frodo down while I�m performing the operation.� Thanks to the help of a few other elves, I was able to bring the things Lord Elrond requested in a short period of time. The Athelas tea that I had given Frodo to drink was very strong and made him doze off. �Your must keep watch Nevdiliel, if Frodo comes round you must give him more of the tea.� Elrond said. Meanwhile Aragorn held Frodo down by the shoulders and I witnessed the operation. The remaining piece of the Witch King�s blade was now removed and crumbed in Elrond�s hand.
After he carefully stitched the wound a few freshly crushed Athelas leaves were put on top of the wound to prevent it from getting inflamed. Aragorn carefully placed the bandage on and then the operation was finally over. �Frodo is a young and strong Hobbit, but the struggle isn�t over yet, he�ll be needing your help, Nevdiliel, when he wakes up.� And Aragorn was right because Frodo was still very weak and his eyesight was failing him. �Arwen found us just in time to bring Frodo back here to Rivendell, I was so anxious to know if they made it back safely as I could hear the Ringwraiths screaming in the distance�. 
While Aragorn was saying these words he was looking in Arwen Undomiel�s direction when she came in to the room. It was clear that there was certain chemistry between them. The spell was suddenly broken when Frodo started to groan of pain and even yelled of fear, as he was delirious with fever. �Calm down, Frodo�I said, you�re safe now, drink this tea, it will make you feel much better.� After he drank the tea he shivered again of pain and the fever was getting the better of him. �Try and get some sleep, love,� I said holding his hand. And so Frodo let himself slip away into a hazy but unsettled sleep.

On Their Way To Bree to meet Gandalf......

Part 14
-Frodo�s Condition Causes Concern-

Samwise was very worried about his friend and master, who lay in agony in the large Elven bed. He felt quite helpless as he couldn�t do very much to help Frodo,  than sit at his bedside and speak comforting words to him.
Frodo himself was bearly aware of  what was going on around him, as he was in a semiconscious state for most of the time. The delirious dreams he had were lucid and therefore he relived the attack at Weathertop over and over again. The lidless eye and the Nazgul were standing in front of him and demanding Frodo to hand over the ring.
He had to fight against the evil power that was literally pulling him into their dark Wraithworld.  It was a dark misty and cold in-between world which was so terrifying and Frodo woke up screaming: �No!!� while he pulled the chain with the ring from his neck and threw it on the floor. Frodo sat straight up with his big fearsome eyes, which still had that terrible strange colour and tried to look around the room . He grasped for breath and managed to grabbed Sam�s  arm. �Help me� he said with a desperate and trembling voice. �Help me before THEY come and take me to their dark world.�  
Those lucid dreams were no dreams but harsh reality as Sauron began to find his way into Frodo�s mind and in this manner did an attempt to get his ring back. 
Elrond had enlightened us about this.� Elvish medicine cannot be of aid here. It�s up to Frodo and his strength to resist the dark powers that haunt him�. Because I wanted to comfort Frodo I told him : � I�m not letting them get to you anymore, neither will Sam and the inhabitants  of Rivendell,� mark my words and now you must lie down and get some rest.� I helped him with his cushions and tucked him in. �Sam, you can stay here with Frodo, while I�m going to seek advise from Lord Elrond, I won�t be long.� I left the room in a swift pace leaving Sam in charge of his best friend. 
�Sam, help me they�re coming nearer and nearer, grab your sword!� Frodo cried out in a state of total panic.
�The ring, the ring, Sam they�ve come for it, THEY musn�t get hold of it�.  Sam looked at the innocent looking ring and chain that he picked up from the floor earlier. �No Frodo, they�ll never get it, I�ll see to that� Sam said. These words seemed to calm Frodo down and he lay still in his bed with his eyes closed. �I�ll keep the ring and chain safe until you�re fit and well again� Sam said reassuring. At that point Frodo opened his eyes again and his reaction to Sam�s kind words was very unexpected: �No Sam, the ring is mine, give it to me!� Frodo snapped to Sam in a harsh way, which left him too startled to give a direct reaction. After Sam over came the shock he placed the ring  in Frodo�s hand with the apology:� I �m sorry Frodo, was only trying to help you, as such a small thing could easily be lost now the chain  is broken, � he stuttered awaiting a reaction, but no reaction came as Frodo sank away again in his semiconscious condition, leaving Sam sitting upset in his chair.
When Lord Elrond and I entered the room, Sam was still shaking. �What�s the matter Sam?� I asked him, in a worried voice as I�ve never seen Sam in that sorry state before. �Frodo snapped at me Lassie�, he answered in a sad voice. �And I only had his best interest at heart, by wanting to keep the ring in my safekeeping until master Frodo is well again�.
�Sam, Frodo didn�t mean to snap at you, he isn�t in the right state of mind right now and isn�t aware of what he is doing or saying. Give him time�, I answered.  Meanwhile Lord Elrond examined Frodo again and spoke some firm words to him in Elvish. The words spoken were not addressed to Frodo directly, but were meant for Sauron , ordering to leave Frodo�s troubled mind and that the ring must be destroyed. to prevent more evil. Sam and I could see that Elrond was in a deep trance. �What is he doing, Lassie?� Sam asked as he became afraid of this to him unknown ritual. �Sam, Lord Elrond is trying to come in to contact with The Dark Lord, an event not without danger for both Frodo and Elrond himself as they both could be pulled into the Dark World and not be able to escape.�  I explained to the very concerned Hobbit. � This confrontation is very important, as it  also concerns the lives of every living soul in Middle-Earth.
Lord Elrond must concentrate deeply to get through to Sauron and therefore he must make use of Frodo�s mind as Sauron is operating from there.� Sam looked at me as it seemed all to difficult for him to follow.  
�Come Sam, �I whispered. We must leave Lord Elrond alone with Frodo now, the less distraction and noise the better.�
Samwise didn�t really want to leave the room, but he realized that it was important that Lord Elrond had to be able to  do his work in peace. Sam followed soon behind me and we walked into the library. �Master Frodo is going to be all right, isn�t he?� Sam asked. �I hope so, Samwise, but he�s being treated in the best way possible. Lord Elrond knows what he�s doing.� Sam nodded and said:� Lassie, why are you here in Rivendell?� That was one of the questions I could be asked,  I answered him in the calmest possible way: �I�m passing through as I was on my way to Archet.  Bag End was getting too quiet for me  without Frodo�s happy voice and cheerfulness around me�. 
�Lassie, you�ve made quite a detour as we�ve passed Archet a few days ago� Samwise said. �Yes Sam, I know it was due to the rain showers that the roads became too muddy for the pony cart to ride through, so I ended up here just in time.�  �You seem to know much about Rivendell, Lassie have you been here before?� Sam asked.  And just when I was nearly forced to tell a little white lie, Lord Elrond and Gandalf entered the library in search of us both.  �Ah, you�re here� Gandalf said. Sam and I stood up as we were anxious for news on Frodo�s condition. �Calm down you two, Lord Elrond has something very important  to say to you. �There�s something you must know� Lord Elrond began. �Frodo is going to be alright, that�s the best part of it , he�ll be up in a few days, but the bad news is that the blade that he was stabbed with was a poisoned one. In this case, the wound isn�t going to fully heal. The effects of his injury can be felt every time a year passes at the same day Frodo was attacked. Elvish medicine can�t cure him here in Middle-Earth. � Sam was astonished and asked worriedly: �But where can Frodo be cured if not here in Middle-Earth?�
Lord Elrond said : �There is a land far from here where the Elves are departing to, a land far beyond the Grey Havens, a land called Valinor.
There lies the answer to your question. But Valinor is a land where only the Elves are allowed to enter.� 
�Can�t an exception be made for master Frodo, Mr. Elrond?� Samwise asked, there must be a way? � Lord Elrond shook his head. �I�m sorry master Gamgee, it isn�t possible and only the Valar are the only beings who have the authority to grant  a pardon. I have no say in this matter.�  Samwise who was desperate to find out how to get his friend a pardon asked : � If Frodo needs a pardon from the Valar, how can he apply for one?� Lord Elrond smiled as he was deeply touched by Samwise�s determination to help his injured friend. �It�s not as easy as you think. You must  have done something to help save the Elvenrace and everything living in Middle-Earth. Once granted permission to go to Valinor means that you can�t  to return to Middle-Earth ever again once you�ve set foot there.� Sam sighed deep and felt sad. �Frodo, brought the ring to Rivendell, isn�t that enough?�
Lord Elrond shook his head again. �Sorry, master Gamgee, I can�t help you here, I wish I could do more for Frodo, but I can�t . Sam and I  went back to Frodo�s bedroom where we found him in a deep but calm sleep. The treatment that Lord Elrond had given him must have been very exhausting, but it looked that he had found peace now and his face didn�t have that troubled look as before. Frodo had slept for a fortnight, and was only woken for his medication and meals. The strange colouring of his eyes had disappeared had he could see well again, but his complexion remained pale and he was still weak. The nightmares had gone and Frodo made a speedy recovery after a little while. 
When he was strong enough to go and discover the beauties of Rivendell (the Elf maidens or the lovely scenery the  choice is yours) he was reunited with Merry and Pippin and with his uncle Bilbo, who he hadn�t seen for a long time.
I decided to leave them alone and let them catch up on the time that they were separated. There was so much to tell as I knew that Bilbo wanted to know what became of Bag End and the Shire and if his nephew was coping on his own as master of the estate. He heard my part of the story and now it was time that he heard it from Frodo.
