What age would be best to get the lasik eye surgery?
I've known people of various ages (30 - 70 yrs old) who have gotten the surgery. The doctor would not do the surgery on a teenager because their eyes were still changing.
How long will it take me to recover from LASIK?
Most patients report visual improvement within 1-2 hours following their procedure. Many find that they are visually comfortable enough to return to work the next day. Patients are told by the doctors to expect about 2 weeks of visual fluctuation
Can you go blind?
As with any surgery, there is a chance of infection. Left untreated, this could possibly lead to complications. We have excellent antibiotics for this purpose and take all the necessary precautions for a sterile environment. In the hands of a skilled and experienced surgeon, the likelihood of blindness is extremely rare.
After surgery, will I still need reading glasses?
Reading glasses come about naturally in everyone, because the body ages. As we age, the eye's focusing system is no longer strong enough for us to compensate at close distances. Usually after the age of 40, with or without LASIK, patients will find a need for reading glasses.
How long does the procedure take?
The entire procedure takes ten to fifteen minutes to complete for both eyes. The actual laser exposure time is typically less than 30 seconds per eye.
How soon will I be able to see after the procedure?
Typically, patients are able to see immediately after the procedure, however vision will be foggy for the first several hours. Vision will normally improve for the first 24 hours and most, but not all, patients are able to drive the first morning after their procedure.
Are there possible complications?
As with any medical procedure, there are risks and complications which may occur in LASIK. Serious sight threatening complications are rare. Every patient should carefully read the informed consent document before they receive LASIK, and discuss any concerns with the doctor.
