| Jan. 26, 1945 Arrived in Saraw, no train on branch line to Sagan, 14 km decided to march instead of staying in train another night. Myself and four others unable to march fast enough to keep up with column, guard made a sleigh in carpenter's shop to pull two worse cases, too heavy to pull, guards made arrangements for us to stay in French P. O. W. hospital, had wound dressed, provided with cigarettes, biscuits, bread, chocolate and bottle of cider. Meal and fag were very much appreciated. First fag since commencement of march. Slept on floor, blankets provided by French. Jan. 27, 1945 Awakened much refreshed, French brought biscuits and coffee, washed, shaved, walked to station, waited from 0930 a. m. to until 3:30 p. m. for train, arrived at Sagan at 4:15 p. m. taken out to camp 1 km practically deserted, officers preparing to evacuate, put in bunker over night provided with good meal. Jan. 28, 1945 Issued 3 English invalid parcels told staying at Sagan for spell. Wound dressed, took over small room with tow other, cigarettes in abundance that officers had left behind, thousand of them, gathered up new set of clean clothes, 200 American and British officers are left behind. Moved in with 5 American officers, lived really well. Jan. 29, 1945 Given job of 1 of four cooks, eating well, Americans swell fellows. Jan. 30, 1945 Issued 1 American No. 10, Jerry flour, dried carrots. Jan. 31, 1945 Informed we were going to move again, regretted thoughts of it. Feb. 1, 1945 Same happy life. |
