Meals and Grocery Shopping

I hope you like to eat pork; there sure is a lot of it in Germany. I didn't know pork
could be served so many ways. Coldcuts are really big over there as well. Be it
breakfast, lunch or dinner, cold cuts are a favorite. While in the hospital, the patient
will be served three wonderful hot meals, complete with dessert. Good luck reading the
menu, I just closed my eyes and pointed. I did make several attempts to special order
scrambled eggs and bacon and the typical american style breakfast links but it
just didn't translate well.  Instead I ended up with a hot dog for breakfast. But I must
say the food was very tasty at the hospital. The cafeteria, located on the second floor
next to the administration building, is open for early breakfast and mid-day lunch. A
small Cafe having daily specials and a very large ice cream and dessert menu (at least
in the summer) is located on campus close to the street but the hours vary greatly from
   day to day.

There are a few restaurants in Coswig which are open late, a chinese food RR is on
Johannestr. just a few blocks from the hospital and there had been someone who
worked there last summer who spoke fluent English.  Two Greek RR exist, one on the
North end of Hauptstrasse and the other on Meissner str. requiring a bus or car trip.
Some waitresses and waiters do speak English, but don't count on it. It's best to bring
along a printout of food/menu items that have been translated just in case. Many
businesses in Coswig do not accept credit cards. It's best to inquire before making your
   purchase/meal.

The local grocery store is called Kaufland. It is just like the grocery stores we are all
familiar with. I recommend bringing a large fabric bag or two from home to carry
groceries because plastic sacks there cost 0.19 each and tear under the weight of a full
bag. I also would suggest trips to the store every other day so you won't have such a
heavy load to carry back to your pension. An ATM machine is located just inside of the
grocery area and accepts most cards with a PIN number.
